Summary/Objective:
The Machine Shop Manager will plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of the shop in accordance with set policies, procedures and guidelines. Assure that facility is maintained in a safe and productive manner.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Directs and manages shop operations for production, maintenance, quality and purchasing.
- Coordinates shop activities through planning with departmental managers to ensure an accurate production schedule is adhered to and that the total manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Ensures safety of all residents, visitors and staff.
- Maintains inventory levels for ductile iron pipe, flanges, wall rings, MJ bells, etc. to meet requirements of open orders.
- Coordinates with inside/outside paint staff to confirm all products requiring paint are scheduled and completed before the required shipment date
- Maintains communication between project managers and fabrication/paint shop as materials are being purchased, received, fabricated, painted, and shipped to the final destination.
- Supervises employees in the fab shop while implementing a system of accountability for all direct reports and hiring/firing decisions with approval of executive management.
- Handles issues that arise in relation to fab shop maintenance (machines/equipment/facilities) and daily yard/warehouse operations.
- Partner with Shipping/Receiving Manager to build an accurate shipping schedule that is communicated to sales & PM staff, monitored daily, and updated as necessary to guarantee orders are being delivered complete and on time.
- Purchase inventory material for fabrication as well as shop consumables and items for machine upkeep and repairs.
- Ensure that safety procedures are being clearly communicated and followed to create an accident-free workplace
- Oversee HR matters for all direct reports including quarterly conversations to have an open discussion on their performance and areas of improvement.
- Assist the Executive team in enhancing the culture, reputation and profitability of the company within the market.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of ASME codes a plus
- Must have knowledge of fabricating pipe spools and/or pressure vessels
- Must be able to read and interpret and work from engineering drawings
- Excellent communication skills and organization
- Proficient computer knowledge with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and email
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
- Previous experience leading teams of 10+ people is a plus
- Demonstrable ability to lead and facilitate instructions to others
- Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Education and Experience:
- BS/BA in related discipline.
- Generally, 5+ years’ experience working in a fabrication shop.
- May require certification.
- FP FAB experience.
- Experience managing 10 + people.
- Advanced degree may offset less experience in some disciplines.
Physical Requirements:
- May be required to work in confined spaces, on ladders and rooftops, and in adverse weather conditions.
- Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. There may be regular exposure to mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odors, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
