The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School (EMNRBS) seeks a passionate, energetic, and dedicated Director of Exceptional Learning to join our school starting July 2024. The ideal candidate will have experience leading and teaching at the High School level; an enthusiasm for project-based instruction and integrated curriculum; a passion for student engagement; a willingness to grow and develop pedagogical systems while monitoring the growth of team members; and a passion for working with adolescents in a community with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

The EMNRBS opened its doors to a diverse freshman class of 110 boys and girls in August 2021; we are excited to welcome our fourth cohort of students in the summer of 2024, bringing our total enrollment to 400 and witnessing our first graduating class cross the stage. This school is the first specialty high school in the entire country for basketball, but NOT for the PLAYING of the game. Our Founding Trustee, former NBA Commissioner David Stern, would often say, “A Ball and a Book Can Change the World.”

Our community promotes a commitment to excellence, social responsibility, achievement, and rigorous programs that empower and inspire both students and those who facilitate their learning. All students will be challenged and supported in their drive to achieve wisdom, service, community, and leadership journey.

Essential Functions:

School Leadership Team

  • Oversight of Special Education and ENL services and compliance.
  • Lead staff with the use of a school-wide project-based approach to design authentic, deeper learning experiences for students.
  • Lead, and support colleagues, to facilitate professional learning sessions to norm expectations around our learning model, differentiation, and co-facilitation.
  • Promote high-quality student learning experiences and student engagement in inquiry, problem-solving, etc.
  • Monitor, record, and display exemplars of accommodations in project-based learning experiences for staff, students, and public reference.
  • Specifying and highlighting effective learning strategies for student and staff reference.
  • Lead the development of academic policy documentation and co-facilitation strategies for staff.
  • Lead collaboration with teaching staff, school counselors, interventionists, and families to ensure that each student is being provided with the services outlined in their IEP.

Meeting Students’ Needs

  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to ensure that each student is reaching the goals of their IEP; Provides tailored support and accommodations for students to meet day-to-day instructional goals and course objectives.
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals including closely collaborating with content teachers to provide accommodations and supports for upcoming units and lessons.
  • Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources including i-pads.

Special Education Processes and Compliance

  • Participates in the special education evaluation and re-evaluation process.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals in compliance with all related state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Completes all school and state reporting requirements.

Student Emotional Wellbeing

  • Leader of the student counseling team composed of multiple guidance counselors and/or social workers.
  • Lead integration of school counseling programs with the total educational curriculum of the school.

Collaboration, Professional Development, and School-Wide Responsibilities

  • Assist in establishing a culture of high academic expectations and behavior.
  • Support a vision of growth for all student’s development of advanced literacy skills.
  • Prepare rigorous and engaging lessons that integrate basketball-related career paths.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary, project-based units.
  • Develop and plan curriculum aligned to New York State standards.
  • Support the social/emotional development of our students by implementing SEL techniques and/or mindfulness curriculum throughout the class.
  • Maintain ongoing parent communication.
  • Participate in the self-evaluation process for personal and professional growth.
  • Contribute to the professional community by identifying needs and developing solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the content area or related field required; Master’s degree, preferred
  • New York State Certification required; dual certification in another content area is preferred
  • Deep knowledge of the New York State Framework and Standards
  • Experience with active learning techniques

The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School offers a competitive starting salary of $95,000, a comprehensive benefits package, professional development opportunities, and an extraordinary work environment. This is a 12-month position.
