Program Summary
Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools are a school-based service delivery model that provides a comprehensive set of services to the school communities we serve. IRCO’s SUN Community Schools offer a variety of programs that support the student’s education and family stability. The Early Kindergarten Transition Program (EKT) is a part of Kindergarten Counts, a community-wide campaign in Multnomah County that brings together early childhood and school partners to promote successful kindergarten transitions for children and their families in SUN Community Schools.

Position Summary
Early Kindergarten Transition (EKT) Childcare works with the SUN Site Manager and the P3 coordinator to provide childcare to students under elementary school age during the EKT parent classes. EKT Childcare staff will work directly under the SUN Site Manager and will support with small group activities, providing adequate supervision, ensuring safety and communicating any child needs to parents participating in the EKT Parent classes. Programs are in-person, located at school sites around SE Portland.

Essential Functions

  • Attend EKT Childcare staff training provided by Multnomah County before the program starts
  • Be able to follow all school district and IRCO safety protocols related to working with youth in school communities 
  • Treat youth and fellow staff respectfully while executing classroom management and adhering to school rules 
  • Implement age-appropriate curriculum for youth enrichment classes. Examples include, art, sports, music, writing, etc.
  • Record and report accurate attendance to SUN Manager 
  • Check students in and out to ensure they leave with the authorized parent
  • Provide culturally responsive communication, outreach, and engagement with students and families 
  • Communicate effectively with SUN Site Manager and parents about student’s success, concerns, or questions 
  • Communicate student needs to parents in a timely and culturally sensitive manner
  • Support at school family nights, special events, and grade promotion events, as needed by request of SUN Site Manager 
  • Be a consistent and reliable staff member during the entire session of summer programming (2-3 weeks total)
  • Effectively communicate work availability and absences (in advance, when possible) 
  • Attend all SUN staff meetings and session orientations 
  • Effectively work with individuals of diverse backgrounds 
  • Understand the role of “mandatory reporter” and communicate any concerns related to student safety to the SUN Manager in a timely manner

Secondary Functions

  • Ability to develop culturally responsive and respectful relationships with students, their families, and all community members we serve 
  • Ability to use good judgment when working with youth in a school setting 
  • Experience working in or delivering services in a school setting 
  • Actively work to disrupt racism and systematic oppression through inclusive program practice and implementation 
  • Utilize bilingual skills to support culturally specific communication to students, families, and clients in their preferred language, when possible

Requirements

Education & Experience

MINIMUM JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years or older 
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background check 
  • High School degree or equivalent is preferred. Experience in the field may be considered as equivalent. 
  • Bilingual/bicultural applicants are encouraged to apply 
  • Experience working directly with youth in groups of 15 or more is preferred 
  • Experience working with under school age youth preferred
  • First aid/CPR Certification is preferred
  • Experience with classroom management and student behavior management preferred 
  • Willingness to complete training on child abuse reporting and classroom management skills annually 
  • Flexibility in task assignment and schedule is required 
  • Familiarity with Outer N/NE/SE Portland communities preferred 
  • Reliable transportation and timeliness for shifts is required 
  • Ability to communicate effectively 
  • Excellent multitasking skills
  • Sensitivity and ability to relate to people from diverse lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and cultures

Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements

  • In person, school setting job
  • Positions require some analysis of problems or decision-making ability
  • Work under close supervision
  • This level has a work environment that is usually well protected, free from hazards or obstacles. There is little element of personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are usually comfortable, with only occasional issues, including, temperature change.
  • The work schedule is mostly stable and does not fluctuate without prior notice

Supervisory Responsibilities

Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions, or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers.
