Job Description - Economist/Senior Economist, Niger, Central I Division, African Department (AFRC1)

Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

The African Department’s Central I Division has an opening for an Economist/Senior Economist to work on the Niger desk, reporting to the Mission Chief/Deputy Division Chief.

Niger is a fragile conflict state with a host of aspirations and challenges that the Fund can help address, in close collaboration with other donors: debt sustainability, climate change,  financial stability and inclusion, economic diversification and governance—all in the context of a complex political landscape. Relations with the authorities are good. Niger is currently implementing an ECF arrangement (two more reviews are expected in 2026). While the RSF is coming to end Niger is interested in a follow up arrangement. Niger is also a member of the WAEMU monetary union, which implies regular coordination and exchanges with other WAEMU country teams and the WAEMU regional team.

The Niger Country team provides an excellent work environment that encourages initiative and independent thinking, combined with efforts to ensure good work-life balance.   The selected candidate will participate in the monitoring of the Fund-supported program, be involved in the analysis of all sectors of the economy, work with the country authorities on policy and technical issues, undertake analytical projects, and prepare drafts of briefing papers, staff reports, and other Board documents.

Central I Division is comprised of the following countries: Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe.

Note: This assignment will count to the required 2-year requirement to apply for A15 opportunities under the new Fungible Macroeconomist Career Framework.

 Qualifications:

In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards, the successful candidate must have a strong background in macroeconomics with good knowledge of Fund policies and practices. He/she should be able to manage his/her time well, have sound analytical, data management, and oral communication skills, as well as possess strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Working knowledge of French is required.
