Job Description - Economist/Senior Economist, Togo, Western III Division, African Department (AFRW3)

Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

African department’s Western III Division of the African Department has an opening for a Desk Economist/Senior Economist to work on Togo.

Togo is a fast growing economy in West Africa, drawing on its advantage as a modern logistics hub (thanks to its natural deep sea port and well-connected airport), a home base of several regionally active banks, and a pioneer of innovative solutions in development and social policies. The Togolese authorities have navigated the shocks of recent years effectively, but this came at a high fiscal cost, pushing debt higher. There is also a legacy of financial sector issues. The Fund supports Togo though an ongoing ECF-arrangement.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The assignment will provide an opportunity to participate in program reviews and potentially a new program request, in the process gaining practical experience on program work; advise on of macroeconomic and structural policies, and guide the Fund’s capacity development for Togo to ensure it corresponds to the authorities’ most important needs. The selected candidate will help coordinate the work of the desk, with main areas of responsibility to be determined in line with skills and interests. She/he is expected to provide first drafts of briefs, policy notes, staff reports, and other program documents. She/he will liaise with other Fund departments and Togo’s development partners, including the World Bank. She/he will also be expected to carry out analytical work on Togo and, time permitting, also other such work of broader relevance for the region. Divisional responsibilities will include commenting on departmental papers and Fund-wide policy papers.

The Western III Division AFRW3 covers the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Togo.

Questions about the desk assignment can be directed to Mr. Hans Weisfeld, Deputy Division Chief/Mission Chief for Togo.

Minimum Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum qualifications set forth in the job standards, the successful candidate must have a strong background in macroeconomics with good knowledge of Fund policies and practices. She/he should have excellent writing skills and be able to manage his/her time well and work under tight deadlines. She/he must also have sound analytical, data management, and oral communication skills as well as possess strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. A working knowledge of French will be a strong advantage but is not considered mandatory.
