Job Description - Editor/Grant Writer, Department of Surgery

Exciting Opportunity at MSK! Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Department of Surgery is a hub of innovative translational and clinical research. We are seeking an Editor / Grant Writer to join our 20-member editorial team and play a critical role in advancing the department’s academic and research mission. In this role, you will partner closely with faculty to enhance grant applications, manuscripts, and other scholarly materials through expert editing, coordination, and project management.

Role Overview:

  • Edit, write, and coordinate academic, research, and grant-related documents, including highly technical materials under tight deadlines

  • Provide substantive, stylistic, and copy editing support to faculty across a broad range of research initiatives

  • Identify peer-reviewed funding opportunities and collaborate with investigators to match opportunities with appropriate applicants

  • Support grant development activities, including proposal coordination and submission planning

  • Partner with investigators and departmental staff to ensure timely, accurate submission of grant proposals

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining high editorial and organizational standards

  • Contribute to maximizing external funding for the Department of Surgery’s research programs

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3–5 years of grant submission and/or project coordination experience OR

  • Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience in publishing, editing, or managing scholarly content (preferred)

  • Demonstrated experience with grant-related documents in an academic or research-intensive environment

  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, technical publishing standards, and editorial best practices

  • Microsoft Word; bibliographic/reference management software (e.g., EndNote)

  • Preferred: Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, QuarkXPress or InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

  • Experience with new media, print, and web-based writing and editing processes

  • American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) Board of Editors in the Life Science University of Chicago Medical Writing & Editing Program certification preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Flexibility and adaptability in response to evolving project needs

  • Ability to understand, synthesize, and communicate complex scientific and medical information

  • Strong organizational skills for managing electronic and print data and materials

Additional Information:

  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, 37.5 hours

  • Location: remote

  • Reporting to: Department of Surgery leadership / Editorial Management
