The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is the Catholic Church in Northeast Kansas: Growing as Disciples of Jesus; Making Disciples for Jesus. The Leaven, the official newspaper of the archdiocese, is seeking to hire a full-time Editorial Assistant, which would responsible for providing administrative and clerical support to the writers and editors, undertake smaller writing assignments and research in support of reporters. This position is full-time, will average 40 hours per week, with the opportunity for a flexible work schedule. This position is hybrid, with work completed in the office and remotely.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with writing, editing, proofreading and fact-checking with occasional recording, transcription of speakers and homilists.
Maintain and update archdiocesan calendar and lay out classified ad page.
Assist in various efforts by Leaven staff to translate, reformat and redistribute its stories to the Spanish-speaking community.
Serve as on-site representative for the editorial staff, responding to subscriber inquiries, complaints.
Assist the social media manager with content creation, scheduling, engagement tracking, and outreach and website maintenance and support.
Sell display and classified ads to local businesses and organizations
Oversee general office functions including supply inventory, paper distribution, and photo and file management.
Provide general support to editorial and advertising staff and assist with distribution logistics and event coordination as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on proofreading, spelling and grammar.
Superior interpersonal, problem solving, time management and organizational skills.
Ability to link The Leaven’s mission, vision, values, goals and strategies to his or her everyday work.
Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
Ability to make decisions and take action with minimal direction.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or related field is preferred.
Minimum three (3) years of relevant work experience in marketing, social media, or publication is preferred.
Familiarity with Canva, InDesign, WordPress or similar layout, website and social media programs is preferred.
Proficiency with technology including the Microsoft Office Suite of products and other communication technology is required as is the ability to learn new technology as needed.
Spanish-speaking/bilingual is considered a plus.
Practicing Catholic in good standing is preferred.
