Job Description - Educational Pathway Coach

Summary




This position is a key member of the Ka Lama program. The individual will have the
experience and capacity to learn and embrace the challenges of teacher recruitment and
retention, navigating complex systems and providing 1-1 guidance to a largely non
traditional student community aspiring to earn and advance in field of teaching. This
position will collaborate with peers to recruit participants and provide them with
training and guidance to be effective teachers in their home communities.


Duties and Responsibilities




Participant recruitment for the program utilizing various in-person and virtual outreach
approaches.
Provides 1-on-1 guidance to participants, including:
o Providing guidance.
o Monitoring academic and professional goal progress.
o Connecting to and accessing other educational and employment services as needed.
Provides additional educational support services i.e. tutoring, creates/delivers support
service workshops
Builds and maintains positive relationships with partner agencies, institutes of higher
education i.e. Leeward Community College, College of Education -University of Hawai’i
West O’ahu and Manoa, Department of Education.
Assists in data collection to support program implementation, evaluation, reporting and
other communications.
Contribute to a team effort to accomplish mission and vision
Maintain confidential information.
Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends.
Other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications




Level 1: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Education or a related field.
Level 2: Master’s degree in educatio
n or a related field that is deemed to positively
contribute to the direct benefits of the program’s specific goals and objectives


Skills and Knowledge




Knowledge of college and university teacher education programs.
Knowledge of education systems. 


Ability to relate well to students and prospective students, especially in individual
and small group meetings.
Ability to provide academic and career guidance and motivate participants.
Knowledge of resources likely to be needed by community college students, such as
sources of financial aid.
Excellent attention to detail.
Self-starter and self-motivated.
Highly dependable and reliable.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to analyze problems, troubleshoot and develop effective solutions.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to produce comprehensive, quality work.
Ability to follow instructions in verbal or written format.
Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Experiences




Knowledge and sensitivity to the interests and needs of families in Native Hawaiian
and/or poverty communities.
Experience with various databases is highly desirable.

Essential Job Requirements


Sit for 6-8 hours at a time, kneeling, squatting, standing, and bending.
Able to work on a computer screen for long periods of time.
Lift up to 25 pounds.
