Electric - Lead Lineman

TITLE: LEAD LINEMAN

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:

The purpose of this classification is to supervise, build, maintain, and troubleshoot underground and overhead power lines and equipment in a safe and expedient manner. Employees in this classification also assist in the training of lower-level linemen.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Assists in planning and layout of work for a crew(s); oversees the operation; ensures the crew(s) adhere to safety policies and procedures; and is the "competent person " in charge.
• Works on crew in the installation of new overhead primary and secondary power lines; installs underground primary and secondary lines.
• Troubleshoots overhead and underground lines; troubleshoots transformer banks and single-phase transformers. Climbs, sets, and frames poles.
• Flags traffic; sets up work zones.
• Understands and adheres to safety procedures.
• Performs a variety of duties associated with the installation and maintenance of power lines, such as hanging transformers, setting pad mount transformers, building transformer banks, hooking up single and three-phase services, fusing cut-outs, building capacitor banks, installing re-closures, repairing and replacing substation breakers, installing anchors, switching circuits, chipping brush, running conduit, cleaning and making up electrical connections, installing and pulling wire, working on transformers, clipping in conductors, and removing old power lines; trims trees from power lines.
• Installs Christmas lights, underground secondary pedestals, underground switching cabinets, personal protective grounds, meters, three-phase gang operated switches, disconnect switches, streetlights, traffic bulbs, and ground rods.
• Responds to emergency calls.
• Changes out poles, transformers, transformer banks, disconnect switches, cut-outs, lightning arresters, pad mount transformers, capacitors, and cross arms.
• Recognizes voltage problems; recognizes safety hazards.
• Assists in training lower-level employees.
• Reads and understands substation switching maps.
• Makes decisions on materials to be used; briefs other employees on work to be done. Locates underground power lines.
• Operates a bucket truck, underground van, digger truck, pole truck, dump truck, ladders, line hoses, hoists, hand tools, power tools, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Stocks warehouse shelves.

Unloads delivery trucks. 

Cleans and maintains truck garage and equipment. 

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED.

Five years of experience in installing, repairing, and maintaining energized electrical lines; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).   

Must possess and maintain a valid Journeyman Lineman Certification.

Must possess and maintain a CPR/First Aid certification.
