Elementary MTSS/Behavior Specialist

Hemlock Public School District is seeking a student-centered, relationship-driven professional to serve as an MTSS/Behavior Specialist at K.C. Ling Elementary School. This position will support students’ behavioral, social, emotional, and academic success through prevention, early intervention, targeted support, and data-informed decision-making.

Working under the direction of the building principal, the MTSS/Behavior Specialist will provide classroom instruction, facilitate small-group interventions, support individual students, and help coordinate the building’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working directly with students, partnering with teachers, and helping children develop the skills they need to succeed.

Primary Responsibilities

• Serve as an active member of the building MTSS team.


• Support the development and implementation of a consistent, effective MTSS framework.


• Coordinate student-support referrals, intervention plans, progress monitoring, and follow-up.


• Use student data to help teams identify needs, select appropriate interventions, and evaluate progress.


• Deliver monthly classroom lessons focused on mental wellness, self-regulation, resilience, problem-solving, relationships, conflict resolution, and positive behavior.


• Facilitate short-term, skill-based small groups for students needing additional support with behavior, social skills, executive functioning, attendance, emotional regulation, or peer relationships.


• Provide targeted classroom-based support for students with persistent behavioral needs.


• Collaborate with teachers to strengthen classroom routines, student engagement, behavior supports, and intervention strategies.


• Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring individualized behavior-support plans.


• Collect and analyze behavioral and intervention data.


• Help students learn and practice replacement behaviors, coping strategies, and successful classroom routines.


• Communicate and collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, and other student-support professionals.


• Support building-wide PBIS, attendance, belonging, and school-culture initiatives.


• Connect students and families with appropriately credentialed district or community professionals when needs exceed the scope of the position.


• Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely records.


• Perform other student-support responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.

Qualifications Required

• Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, behavioral science, child development, or a related field.


• Successful experience working with elementary-aged students.


• Strong understanding of student behavior, relationship-building, and positive intervention practices.


• Ability to deliver classroom lessons and facilitate small groups.


• Ability to collect, interpret, and use student data to guide decisions.


• Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.


• Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.

Qualifications Preferred

• Michigan teaching certificate or another relevant professional credential.


• Experience working within an MTSS or PBIS framework.


• Training or experience in behavioral intervention, restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, or mental wellness.


• Experience developing and monitoring student intervention or behavior-support plans.


• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary student-support teams.

Position Details

• Full-time, school-year position


• Salary anticipated at approximately $50,000, based on qualifications and experience

Scope of the Position

This is a student-support position and is not a clinical counseling or building administrator role. The MTSS/Behavior Specialist will not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions, conduct special education evaluations, provide IEP-mandated counseling or social-work services unless appropriately credentialed, supervise or evaluate employees, or serve as the building’s formal disciplinary administrator.
