PAVE Academy Charter School is a public charter school in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY. PAVE provides a K-8 experience that lays the foundation for a productive and choice-filled life. We build our students brick by brick, equipping them with the academic, social, and emotional skills that they need to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, overcomers and leaders in their communities.

PAVE educates 490 Kindergarten – 8th-grade scholars each school year. Across our student population, 85 percent of our students are eligible for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FRLP); 17 percent receive special education services, and 10 percent are English Language Learners (ELL).

PAVE Red Hook seeks a Dean of Students responsible for ensuring that high behavioral expectations are consistently communicated and maintained throughout the school. The Dean of Students will work with the Instructional Leadership Team, teachers, parents, students, and outside instructional consultants. Reporting directly to the Elementary or Middle School Principal, the Dean of Students will establish a strong achievement centered culture; ensure the functionality of school-wide systems that support student achievement, safety, efficiency and PAVE’s core values; and ensure that the high expectations we have for our scholars are maintained in each classroom and by all teachers at PAVE. The Dean of Students will foster expectations around what is possible for children growing up in the Red Hook community.

  • Collaborate with the Principal to foster a positive, achievement-oriented culture reflecting PAVE’s core values.
  • Guide the implementation of key Responsive Classroom components (e.g., morning meetings, positive teacher language, logical consequences).
  • Observe classrooms to uphold high expectations and address behavior concerns.
  • Coach teachers to build strong classroom communities with clear expectations and routines.
  • Lead professional development on school community building, classroom management, social-emotional development, and family partnership.
  • Serve as the point person for behavior crisis intervention and acute behavior issues.
  • Lead weekly Community Meetings and other school-wide culture-building activities.
  • Ensure constant communication between teachers and parents.
  • Monitor behavioral pull-outs and in-school suspensions.
  • Coordinate after-school programming and enrichment activities.
  • Support and supervise school-wide procedures (arrival, recess, lunch, transitions, and dismissal).
  • Maintain accurate student discipline records in PAVE’s information system.
  • Analyze culture data daily and weekly to respond effectively.
  • Actively participate in the instructional leadership team to support school-wide success.
  • Mentor the Parent Advisory Board.
  • Teach as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
    • Strong commitment to PAVE’s mission and vision.
    • Relentless work ethic and patience to overcome challenges.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team.
    • Strong public speaking and writing skills.
    • Technologically proficient and adaptable.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • 3 or more years of experience working with Grades K-4.
    • 3 or more years of teaching experience in a public charter school.
    • 3 or more years of Responsive Classroom experience.
    • Bachelor’s Degree (required), Master’s Degree (preferred).
