Within the Employee Relations Office of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the Employee Relations Officer is responsible for a wide range of human resource functions to support over 700 employees and judicial officers throughout the Rhode Island state court system. Reporting to the Assistant State Court Administrator for Employee Relations, ensures the consistent application of the Judicial Personnel Rules and Regulations, Employee Handbook, Judiciary collective bargaining agreements, and federal and state labor laws. Provides prompt and effective assistance to judicial officers and employees with all human resource matters. Assists court administrators and managers in carrying out their duties in relation to personnel. Regular duties include, but are not limited to: employee leave management; processing recruitment forms and documentation; handling new employee hires and orientation; receiving and reviewing time cards and summary sheets weekly; entering employee exception hours into the Department of Administration payroll system; calculating and processing payroll changes; processing personnel actions, salary and benefit changes, employment verifications, disability and retirement forms, and other employee status changes and human resource forms; maintaining confidential personnel files and employee medical files; workers’ compensation reporting; providing general information to judicial officers and employees on benefits and other personnel matters; responding to inquiries and requests from individual employees, managers and court administrators; assisting with the coordination of employee trainings and with special projects; interacting with State personnel, payroll, employee benefits, retirement and administrative staff; performing administrative, clerical, and other support functions for the Assistant State Court Administrator for Employee Relations; and other related duties as may be assigned.

Also, be advised that a new provision in RI General Law 35-6-1 was enacted requiring direct deposit for all employees. Specific to new hires, the law requires that all employees hired after September 30, 2014 participate in direct deposit. Accordingly, any employee hired after this date will be required to participate in the direct deposit system. At the time the employee is hired, the employee shall identify a financial institution that will serve as a personal depository agency for the employee.
