Job Description:

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking a motivated, passionate individual to serve as a part of the agency’s Environmental Review Team to work with agency staff and partners committed to protecting Nebraska's threatened and endangered species. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to work both independently and with a team, adjust communication styles based on the audience, and be highly adaptable as daily priorities shift. This position provides the opportunity for professional growth while working with accomplished leaders across the state in a fun, flexible, and team-oriented work environment. The chosen candidate will have opportunities to spend time outdoors to facilitate their understanding of relevant projects and occasionally assist with species research and habitat restoration projects.

JOB DUTIES: Under limited supervision, this position performs environmental reviews for a variety of projects with the overarching goal of protecting Nebraska’s natural resources. Examples of such projects include roads, bridges, dams, public utilities, etc. Gathers and analyzes technical data needed to assess the environmental impacts of proposed actions on fish, wildlife, associated habitat, and public lands. Provides guidance to project proponents and consults with state and federal agencies on project impacts to listed endangered and threatened species under the Nebraska Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act. Represents the agency at state interagency meetings, scoping meetings, public meetings, and reviews and prepares responses to agency or public comment requests. Develops and provides training and associated materials to public and private sector users of the agency’s online Conservation and Environmental Review Tool (CERT). Assists in development and administration of the CERT and provides first-contact trouble shooting to users. Performs related work as required.


 

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in the physical sciences, natural sciences, environmental science, geology, biology, agronomy, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, hydrology, community and regional planning, or a related field. Experience may substitute for education or a year-for-year basis.


 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Knowledge of: local, state and federal environmental laws, statutes, and regulations; environmental and technical evaluation and assessment techniques; best management practices as they may apply to protection of fish and wildlife habitat; life history and ecology of Nebraska endangered and threatened species; software and databases such as Adobe, ESRI GIS, and Microsoft Suite products.
 

Skills to: listen to and understand information received; effectively communicate and collaborate with a multitude of personalities; creatively address challenges in species conservation; prioritize a workload based on relative importance.
 

Ability to: use deductive reasoning to make informed decisions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff and other agency representatives with a high level of professionalism; communicate data, reports, and recommendations to individuals and groups in a technical and non-technical manner; objectively handle controversial issues; comprehend and utilize maps and construction plans; organize and analyze data to develop conclusions; present information accurately and write reports.
