Job Description - Endoscopy Center Nursing Assistant

Description

Definition of Position:

Responsible for rendering professional care to patients in Endoscopy Center under the direct supervision of an Endoscopy Center nurse. Builds positive relationships based on respect for others and demonstrates a helpful attitude. Maintains effective communication with both internal and external customers. Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management. Seeks educational opportunities for own professional growth and development. Attends staff meetings and in-service opportunities as appropriate.

This position is Monday-Friday, 10 hour shifts between the hours of 6:30AM-5:30PM with a rotating day off each week. Enjoy a diverse workweek with rotation through multiple areas in the ambulatory surgery center. 

No nights, weekends and holidays!

8 paid holidays including the day after Thanksgiving!

Direct Supervisor: Endoscopy Nurse Supervisor or designee

Responsibilities:

Nursing assistants work in several roles of the Endoscopy Center: Prep Assistant, Turn-Around Assistant, Recovery Room HUCNA and Scope Reprocessing Technician.

Prep Assistant:

  1. Patient escort from waiting room to prep area
  2. Obtaining vital signs
  3. Assist with transport of patient to procedure area cart
  4. CLIA waived testing
  5. Room turnover – cleaning and stocking
  6. Any other duties as assigned within the scope of their practice

Turn-Around Assistant:

  1. Assist with transportation of patient in and out of procedure room
  2. Initiate EKG and vital sign monitoring equipment set up in procedure area and recovery
  3. Assist physician with dilation
  4. Answer call light in procedure area and assist with trouble shooting equipment
  5. Verify pathology specimen log in and pack for shipping
  6. Room turnover – cleaning and stocking
  7. Any other duties as assigned within the scope of their practice

Recovery Room HUCNA:

  1. Responsible for processing physicians orders
  2. Generate discharge paperwork
  3. Assist with patient care including but not limited to obtaining vital signs, repositioning, toileting, and discharge transportation.
  4. Removal of IV catheter as instructed by RN
  5. Room turnover – cleaning, stocking and ordering as necessary
  6. Any other duties as assigned within the scope of their practice

Scope Reprocessing Technician:

Setup

  1. Placement and connection of appropriate scope into procedural room
  2. Ensure proper functioning of equipment
  3. Removal and storage of scope after disinfection
  4. Cleaning, stocking and ordering of supplies as necessary
  5. Any other duties as assigned within the scope of their practice

Washer

  1. Initial cleaning of scope at bedside
  2. Room turnover
  3. Leak testing of scope
  4. Manual cleaning of scope and accessory equipment at sink
  5. Connection of scope to Automatic Endoscopy Reprocessor (AER)
  6. Testing and documentation of concentration of OPA prior to each AER cycle
  7. Any other duties as assigned within the scope of their practice

Requirements

Qualifications:

  1. High school graduate with one or more years of related work experience in GI endoscopy is preferred.
  2. Able to read, write and communicate
  3. Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
  4. Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality
  5. NA Certificate

Working Conditions:

  1. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens requiring the use of universal precautions and/or personal protective equipment.
  2. Knowledgeable of potential exposure to hazardous materials (i.e., patient body fluids and disinfectant chemicals)
  3. Position requires full range of motion, frequent standing, walking and sitting for extended periods of time.
  4. Must be able to help lift, turn, roll, push, and pull equipment/patients for proper positioning during procedures and transportation from one area to the other as necessary.
  5. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  6. Requires visual and hearing acuity.
