Job Description - Engineering Aide - Distribution Engineering

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

City Light is looking for two Engineering Aides to join our team of professional engineers. The positions are in Distribution Engineering: one at the South Service Center and one at the North Service Center. In this role, you will perform non-professional engineering support tasks within an engineering office: interpreting engineering documents, calculating costs, field operation, or elementary drafting; performing computations; processing invoices and maintaining and updating work orders for engineering records. This position reports to the Distribution Engineering Supervisor at each Service Center location.

Here is more about what you’ll be doing:
As part of the Work Order Desk team, you will be responsible for the following:
Responsible for reviewing, processing, assembling and distributing work order packages of engineering drawings; updating and maintaining data files and records.
Prepares, applies and transmits street use permits to multiple governmental agencies for approval. Sends notification to jointly owned poles.
Calculates charges, performs computations and measurements and maintains records.
Reviews, codes and processes incoming invoices.
Orders office supplies; tracks purchase contracts and maintenance of the group printers and plotters.
Work and Asset Management asset entry and work order records research.
Verify existing conditions in the field using cameras, maps and data extracts.
Assist field engineers by recording notes for work needed to provide clearance or correct violations.
Prepare reports and performance metrics for progress reporting to management and executives.
May act as backup to other team members
Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

Satisfactory completion of high school mathematics including trigonometry (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
Some work is performed in the field including exposure to all types of weather, traffic or hazardous/toxic substances.
May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
May be required to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time.
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
Experience performing work similar or equivalent to Engineering Aide duties
Experience providing backend aid to Electrical Engineers
Computer skills and experience with software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Work and Assessment Management Systems (WAMS), CurrentView (GIS) or similar applications.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are a necessity
Must be a team player with a positive attitude and desire to make a positive difference
Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, specifications, work order documents and asset records
Ability to complete complex research in a timely manner
Ability to work independently under time constraints, stress and while managing multiple customer requests at the same time.
Ability and eagerness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively and independently.
Ability to apply critical thinking when reviewing and assessing technical information
Ability to develop, cultivate and function as a member of a close-knit team
Ability to organize and prioritize time, decisions and resources
Ability to reset priorities while still achieving maximum customer service
