Job Description - Engineering Director

We are seeking a highly experienced Engineering Director to lead engineering efforts for the our client based in Sofia, Bulgaria. The successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of AP1000 technology, engineering leadership, and regulatory experience to drive delivery excellence in a high-profile new build or deployment initiative. This opportunity will not require a full location 2/3 of the time in Sofia and 1/3 from your home location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on AP1000 nuclear reactor systems and related infrastructure.
  • Serve as the technical authority for all engineering aspects of the AP1000 project, ensuring alignment with project objectives, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate closely EPC contractors, local authorities, and stakeholders to ensure integration and compliance of design, licensing, and construction activities.
  • Oversee engineering deliverables, including system design reviews, configuration control, interface management, and safety analysis.
  • Manage technical risks and drive resolution of complex design or system integration challenges.
  • Represent the project in regulatory, technical, and commercial discussions both locally and internationally.
  • Support training, knowledge transfer, and localization initiatives for the long-term sustainability of nuclear talent in Bulgaria.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in nuclear power plant engineering, with at least 5 years specifically on the AP1000 reactor design or implementation.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in large-scale nuclear projects, preferably on new builds or major modifications.
  • Familiarity with AP1000 passive safety systems, instrumentation and control (I&C), plant licensing, and design certification.
  • Strong understanding of international nuclear regulatory frameworks, including IAEA and WENRA guidance.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills; fluency in English is required, Bulgarian is a plus.
  • Experience working in or with Eastern European or international energy sector environments is an asset.

Preferred Attributes

  • Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer (PE) status.
  • Previous involvement in AP1000 projects in China, the U.S., or other AP1000-deployed nations.
  • Ability to mentor and lead multi-cultural and cross-functional engineering teams.
