Job Description - Entry Level Laboratory Technician

Description

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a hardworking and proactive individual to join our materials laboratory team and support our geotechnical engineers and construction management group. This role involves assisting the laboratory supervisor with sample preparation, testing and reporting of the test results. To ensure that all tests are performed according to relevant standards (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO).

Comprehensive training will be provided, so we're looking for someone with a positive, proactive attitude—someone who is dependable, takes initiative, and is eager to learn and grow within our organization.

Requirements

  • Assist in managing daily laboratory testing related to soil, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials.
  • Ensure that all tests are performed according to relevant standards (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO).
  • Monitor material quality to verify compliance with project specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Help coordinate sampling and testing schedules with field crews and project engineers.
  • Review test data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining test reports and logs for project documentation.
  • Help maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory testing equipment.
  • Ensure the lab is kept clean, safe, and organized.
  • Ensure that all test equipment used is functioning correctly, maintained, and calibrated
  • Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications
  • Communicate with various field personnel and colleagues
  • Perform other duties, as assigned by supervisor or experience staff, as needed
  • Occasional Handling of materials and equipment of varying size and configuration, at temperatures in excess of 300 degrees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds
  • Capable of reading, understanding, and accurately documenting collected data
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in basic mathematical calculations
  • Basic computer proficiency, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Must maintain qualifications to operate company vehicles, including a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record

Work Environment

  • Ability to withstand moderate physical activity (standing, lifting, walking, bending, stooping over, reaching, etc.)
  • Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work nontraditional or extended hours, if necessary, to comply with testing requirements and/or to meet project deadlines. 
  • Practices organization, cleanliness, attention to detail, quality and safety
  • Loud noise levels at times (hearing protection provided).
