The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) owns and operates the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The Environment Safety and Health (ESH)/Quality Field Technician drives safety and quality standards set by the Integrated Management System (IMS) in the following ISO Standards – 9001, 14001 and 45001 and applicable DOE requirements. The ESH/Quality Field Technician will work in conjunction with the Bull Gang to ensure LBNF/DUNE Building and Sight Infrastructure (BSI) materials that are delivered to SURF are managed for delivery on the surface or underground.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following reflects SDSTA’s definition of essential functions for this position and does not restrict other tasks that may be assigned. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Attend daily work shift planning meeting and represent the ESH\Quality portion of the meeting.
- Assist with developing any Job Hazard Analyses (JHA’s) and/or Standard Operating Processes (SOP’s) required.
- Responsible for all ESH\Quality related documentation and retention of those records.
- Perform receipt inspection (visual) for damage on surface or underground. The delivery owner shall be notified immediately if any visible damage is observed upon receipt.
- Ensure safe disassembly and reassembly of equipment and test for functionality.
- Maintain, in conjunction with the Bull Gang, daily and monthly progress reports.
- Conduct and document weekly progress meetings between FFDG and appropriate SDSTA team members.
- Submit Monthly progress reports.
- Manage rigging equipment including storage and inspection.
- Perform escort, flagger, spotter, and maintenance of traffic duties in support of deliveries to SURF.
- Ensure required training is completed.
- Ensure all applicable rules, regulations and standards are followed with associated work.

- All activities necessary to manage, control and document work to ensure compliance with the Subcontract requirements.
- Ensuring adequate safety and quality control services are provided for work accomplished on and off site by his/her organization, suppliers, sub-tier Subcontractors, technical laboratories, and consultants.
- The work activities that require testing and inspection and all other functions relating to the requirements for quality work shall be documented.
- The quality and timely provision of workmanship and material provided under this Subcontract.

Education
- Minimum 5 years’ experience or an associate’s degree in related field required
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Certifications and Licenses
- Valid driver’s licenses required.
- OSHA certification is preferred.
- Certified rigger training is preferred.
Experience
- Experience working within an ISO system.
- Mobile equipment experience.
Preferred Experience
- Nonconformance/Corrective Action system experience.
- ISO auditing experience.
- Previous experience working in a government regulated environment (DOE, EPA, etc.).
- Underground/MSHA experience.
Competencies, Knowledge and Skills
- Strong PC skills: MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Understanding ISO, OSHA, MSHA and DOE standards.

- This position may require working in both surface and underground environments at depths up to 5000 feet, which may include exposure to extreme conditions, confined spaces, and varying temperatures.
