Salary Range: Grade U6 $27.75 - $36.41, Starting $27.75
Division – Section – Unit: ES&C / Environmental Monitoring
Shift and Days: Mon. – Fri. 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM w/some mandatory overtime weekends & holidays
Location: Providence and East Providence

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The Environmental Monitor is responsible for working at the treatment plant and at various other locations to collect, analyze, and transport samples.  Installs, maintains, calibrates and removes sampling equipment on-site as well as at various locations. Collects, monitors, and preserves water, wastewater, and other samples from treatment plants, rivers, bays, industries, manholes and various other remote locations.  Transports samples to the laboratory under strict time constraints and adheres to EPA, NBC and chain of custody procedures ensuring all permit requirements are adhered to. Utilizing various pieces of equipment, software, and technology; prepares, maintains and enters sample and test data.  In addition, electronic records complete paperwork and produce various types of reports.  Maintains and calibrates equipment, tools, and sophisticated monitoring devices used in the drawing, monitoring, and testing of samples.  Analyzes, records and interprets results of instrumentation. Installs, maintains, cleans and removes samplers and monitoring equipment from a variety of locations, such as wastewater treatment facilities, manholes, rivers, and bays, off-site or industrial sites.   Works with and maybe exposed to hazardous chemicals and worksites.  Works on the boat collecting and recording samples.  Deploys, troubleshooting and retrieves equipment.  Calibrates, filters, and preserves samples.  Works with equipment and instrumentation such as underwater cameras, sondes, and other monitoring devices.  Assists other departments or environmental agencies such as DEM collecting samples. Trains other employees as needed or assigned. The employee is considered an essential employee and is expected to work scheduled holidays and several scheduled weekend days each month.  Essential employees are also expected to work during adverse and extreme weather conditions in accordance with the NBC Adverse Weather Policy. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma, or G.E.D., and two years of environmental sampling experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Safe driving principles; Operating a boat is a plus; Collecting samples; Sampling principles and techniques; Using sampling equipment; Operating a computer and applicable software applications; Performing basic biology and chemistry tests.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's License in good standing. Must obtain a Safe Boating Certification within six (6) months of employment.
