Job Description - Environmental Programs Coordinator

GRU's Water/Wastewater Department is seeking an Environmental Programs Coordinator to lead and support critical environmental initiatives that help ensure the reliable delivery of essential water and wastewater services, safeguard public health, maintain regulatory compliance, and promote environmental stewardship. In this role, you will work collaboratively with customers, stakeholders, and internal teams to advance programs that protect our water resources, reduce environmental impacts, and support the vital utility services and sustainable future our community depends on.


 


Note: This position is in-person and located in Gainesville, Florida. An eligibility list may also be established to fill future vacancies.

Summary

This professional position plays a key role in protecting public health and the environment by supporting and advancing GRU’s environmental programs. The Environmental Programs Coordinator facilitates multiple programs, including Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG), Water Conservation, Cross Connection Control, and Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Mitigation—to promote regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.


This role is ideal for someone with a strong science background who enjoys working with people, solving problems, and translating complex regulations into practical solutions for customers, stakeholders, and internal teams.

Examples of Work

Essential Functions:


Coordinates and supports environmental programs including, but not limited to: Fats, Oils and Grease, Cross Connection Control, Water Conservation, and Sanitary Sewer Overflow Mitigation.


Serves as a point of contact for customers, businesses, and stakeholders-providing guidance on environmental compliance, permitting, and best practices.


Interprets local, state, and federal regulations and applies them to GRU’s environmental programs and real-world situations.


Conducts site visits and inspections to evaluate compliance and determine permitting or program requirements.

Examples of Work (continued)

Prepares clear, professional compliance correspondence, reports, and documentation.


Tracks, manages, and analyzes program data using databases and spreadsheets to support reporting and decision-making.


Collaborates with internal teams (engineering, operations, customer service) to address environmental issues and improve program effectiveness.


Supports updates to ordinances, policies, and program procedures to reflect evolving regulations and industry practices.


Develops and delivers public outreach and educational materials to promote environmental awareness and program participation.


Assists with emergency water and wastewater response activities, including public notifications, as needed.


Required to respond in emergency conditions.


Non-Essential Functions:


Assists engineering division with environmental issues.


May act in absence of supervisor.


May assist in training and overseeing work of division personnel engaged in environmental programs and related work.


Performs other duties as assigned.


 

Education

Bachelor’s degree from a college or university in environmental science, biology, chemistry, environmental engineering, or a related field.


An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if they meet the requirements of the department.


Ability to obtain applicable program certifications within two (2) years of hire, including:


Cross Connection Control or Backflow Prevention certification.


FOG Management certification or equivalent.

Experience

No experience is required; however, three years of experience in environmental compliance, utilities, regulatory programs, customer service, data management, public outreach, inspections, or related areas is preferred.


Relevant internships, academic projects, or entry-level professional experience may be considered.

Valid Florida Class E Driver's License required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General principles and practices related to water and wastewater utilities. Knowledge of water conservation, cross connection control, FOG management, and related environmental programs preferred.


Organize, analyze, and maintain program data and records including the use of databases, spreadsheets and recordkeeping.


Interpret regulations and determine their impact on utility operations and compliance.


Effectively communicate with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing, including public outreach and customer service practices.


Prepare professional reports, correspondence, and presentations.


Work independently while contributing effectively to a team. Build and maintain effective working relationships with customers, coworkers, regulators, contractors, elected officials, media and the public. Effectively oversee work of others.
