Job Description - Environmental Services Technician - Berkeley Hospital

HOURS: 8:00am - 4:30pm, includes every other weekend

JOB SUMMARY: Performs functions dealing with large floor equipment, sweeping, mopping, use of strong floor chemicals, scrubbing, buffing and waxing of public and patient care areas. Technical skills in removing Regulated Medical Waste including packaging of the waste to meet various regulatory standards for transportation and storage (DHEC, EPA and OSHA). Complete standardized cleaning process for patient rooms, offices and other ancillary areas. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or manager to include but not limited to any support services tasks or processes. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

EDUCATION:   Basic reading comprehension skills required, and a GED or High School Diploma is preferred.  For those without a GED or High School diploma, a passing result for a reading comprehension assessment administered during the interview process by a Human Resources representative will be acceptable.     

EXPERIENCEHospital experience in Regulated Medical Waste and/or experience as a floor finisher preferred.

PRIMARY SOURCE VERIFICATION: Not applicable.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: A basic knowledge of all relative codes (i.e. DHEC, TJC, OSHA, EPA, and LIFE SAFETY CODES) is required.  Position requires a working knowledge of the correct procedures for packing, storing and transporting of regular solid waste, regulated medical waste, pharmaceutical hazardous waste and soiled linens.  Position requires a working knowledge of floor care (hard and/or soft), the ability to recognize the cause of soiling of floors and be able to determine the proper way of cleaning. Requires the ability to communicate effectively and work well with all levels of supervision, patients, the public, and other health care workers.  Must have the ability to recognize malfunctions of the equipment, report accurately any equipment not performing at its optimal level for repairs, remain calm in a fast-paced environment, and handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. Must able to learn and conform to the 7-step cleaning process. Maintain a professional and neat appearance is required to project a positive image of Roper Saint Francis Healthcare. Candidate must maintain strict confidentiality of all work-related information.

OTHER: This position may require operation of a vehicle for Roper St. Francis Healthcare business.  Due to this job requirement, the selected candidate/employee must possess a valid, current South Carolina driver's license.   In addition, the selected candidate/employee must be insurable under the Roper St. Francis Healthcare vehicle insurance plan, which will be verified by reviewing licensure and driving record.

CONTACTS: Constantly interacts with Support Staff and Nursing Staff.  Have some interactions with patients, physicians, family members and management.

WORK DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT:

Constant standing. Frequent walking, bending, stooping and stretching. Frequent lifting, moving or carrying, pushing or pulling of weight up to 50 lbs. Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity. Constant reaching with hands/arms. Intermittent stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Possible exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Possible exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases, toxic substances, bio-hazardous materials and/or other conditions common to a healthcare environment. Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Constant exposure to wet or humid (non-weather) conditions.  Intermittent exposure to risk of electrical shock. Moderate to loud noise level in work area. Requires hand-eye coordination.
