Description

The Mariners’ Museum sits in an urban oasis – the 550-acre park is now home to the 167-acre Mariners’ Lake and the Noland Trail – a five-mile shoreline trail with 14 bridges. Inside, the museum boasts 90,000 square feet of galleries, exhibits, and community spaces. Our Facilities Management Department is dedicated to delivering top-tier service and comprehensive facility support to maintain the Museum’s buildings, infrastructure, and surrounding property. The department’s skilled technical staff ensure the reliable operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Museum’s mechanical, electrical, and physical infrastructure, preserving our world-class collection with secure and sound power, water, HVAC, fire protection, and structural systems.

We’re looking to add an Environmental Systems Technician to our team! This hands-on role is ideal for candidates with a strong background in HVAC/R systems, building automation controls, and maintenance supervision. We seek someone skilled in coordinating repairs, troubleshooting complex systems, and ensuring smooth facility operations. Reporting to the Director of Facility Operations, you will oversee HVAC/R and Building Automation Systems (BAS) to maintain optimal indoor environmental conditions. Responsibilities include performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on HVAC/R systems, while primarily supervising contractors and staff. Key systems include HVAC and lighting controls, low-pressure steam, hot water, chilled water, DX refrigeration, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and gas/oil-fired boilers and associated piping. The Environmental Systems Technician is a full-time (40 hours a week), hourly, non-exempt position that pays $30/hr - $35/hr (based on qualifications, certifications, and experience). We offer really great benefits, including:

Primary Duties:

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • On a daily basis, monitor all Museum HVAC/R systems, including all Mechanical Units and Building Automation & Control Systems (BAS)
  • Assist and/or supervise outside contractors to inspect, maintain, modify, and repair HVAC/R and BAS systems and equipment
  • Accomplish minor repairs, modifications, and maintenance of HVAC/R and BAS systems
  • Make recommendations concerning maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC/BAS and other Museum systems
  • Make and/or assist with minor plumbing and/or electrical system repairs and/or modifications
  • Use approved methods and procedures for working around artifacts and exhibits (refer to Museum Handbook)
  • Keep organized records of work performed
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Perform other duties as assigned such as: Assist other Museum staff and departments as directed with disaster/storm recovery, etc.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and correcting diverse HVAC/R and BAS systems
  • Thorough knowledge of standard terms, practices, procedures, and modern methods in the HVAC/R trade.
  • Proficient in using all tools, materials, and equipment relevant to HVAC/R systems.
  • Basic computer skills with the potential for full proficiency, including experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) to effectively complete tasks.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Capable of maintaining accurate daily time records.
  • Team-oriented mindset, with a willingness to assist other departments and staff.
  • Commitment to providing excellent internal customer service and fostering professional relationships with staff, visitors, and contractors.
  • Strict adherence to Mariners’ Museum and Park policies regarding the handling of artifacts and exhibits.
  • Ability to work safely at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Dedication to following all company procedures and safety regulations, including practical adherence to OSHA standards for each task.
  • Willingness to adhere to prescribed dress codes and appearance standards, including wearing the Facilities Management uniform.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in museums, archives, or preservation-focused facilities
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE and AAM standards for artifact preservation

Education, Licensure, Certifications:

  • Possess a valid Virginia driver's license (must provide a current DMV report at time of application)
  • High school graduate, or equivalent; Specialized HVAC courses at trade or technical school preferred
  • Possess valid EPA 608 Refrigerant Certification

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen prior to employment
    • Valid State of Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles Vehicle Operator’s license with a good DMV record required. Including the stipulation about providing a DMV report and agreeing to periodic updates, as failure to meet these requirements can impact employment eligibility.
  • Must be available during off duty hours to respond to emergencies
  • Must be able to work evenings, holidays and weekends
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to push, pull, carry, or maneuver heavier items with the assistance of additional manpower or appropriate equipment.
