· Collects samples of air, soil, water, vegetation, and other environmental media to determine concentrations of hazardous materials/radioactivity.
· Prepares analytical data records and reports.
· Monitors time and intensity of exposure of personnel working in hazardous waste disposal areas.
· Conducts radiation/contamination surveys of various sampling media.
· Performs daily performance tests of detection instruments against standards to ensure their accuracy.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
· Demonstrated ability and understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry and science.
· Demonstrated reading and comprehension level sufficient to follow procedures, prepare survey reports, and prepare equipment transfer papers.
· Ability to work in a support role, including communication of verbal instruction to others.
· Communication – ability to read and interpret documents such as regulations and guidelines, safety procedures, plans and guidelines.
· Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly on a technical level.
· Skills – ability to work with statistics. Ability to apply concepts related to safety and implement solutions.
· Reasoning – ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Working Conditions
· Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
· Ability to walk, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
· Ability to perform repetitive movements of the fingers, hands, wrists and arms.
· Ability to participate in physically demanding work while wearing personnel protective equipment including respiratory protection.
· Medically qualified to wear a respirator, able to lift 30 lbs, and able to climb ladders.
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to normal office conditions when not in the field. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. When visiting site locations, employee may be exposed to radiological hazards, extreme weather conditions, loud noise, or be required to wear personal protective equipment and respiratory protection.
