Reports To: Superintendent of Operations/Roadmaster

Type of Position: Seasonal- Full Time (Not Benefits Eligible)

Employee Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Compensation: $25/hr - $30/hr

Location: Durango, CO

Job Summary:

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is seeking a full time Mechanic 2 for Motorized and On-Track Equipment.

The primary responsibility for this position is to proactively maintain and repair equipment used by the Maintenance of Way department. This includes but is not limited to motorized track cars, excavators, speed-swings, ballast regulators, tampers, tie exchangers, small engine equipment, hydraulic and electrical equipment.

The Mechanic 2 will assist the Superintendent/Roadmaster/Asst Roadmaster in scheduling maintenance and repair of equipment, ensure routine upkeep of equipment is performed in line with manufacturer recommendations and warranty requirements and maintain service records.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment used by the Maintenance of Way Department, both on track and other mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment.
• Maintain service and repair records.
• Perform daily inspections of equipment.
• Schedule routine service for all equipment per manufacturer recommendations and warranty requirements.
• Maintain inventory of parts and components 
• Other duties related to equipment repair and maintenance.

Requirements

 Education, Skills, and Work Experience Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2 years previous mechanic and electrical experience
• Previous relevant diesel and gas engine experience. 
• Small engine repair and rebuild experience.
• Knowledge of the workings of diesel engines, gas engines and related components.
• Understanding of industrial electrical systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair Hydraulic systems and components.
• Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English.
• Ability to read/interpret manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
• Experience operating various types of heavy equipment.
• Welding, machining, or other trade skills are a plus.
• Functions well within a team environment.

Other Requirements

• Successfully pass background check
• Successfully pass pre-employment drug screen and partake in ongoing post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and random drug testing.
• Successful completion of a Physical Capabilities Exam
• Must have valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle report check

Work Environment:

• Must wear all the required personal protective equipment.
• Must have physical ability/agility to lift, climb, crawl, stoop, and bend in the performance of assigned tasks inside and outside of shop environment.
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions when field repairs are required. 
• Frequent to occasional lifting, carrying, and lowering of equipment or materials weighing up to 75 lbs.
• Navigating safely in and around a railroad yard and industrial environment.
• Weekend work and overtime may be required.
• Normal Summer schedule consists of 4, 10-hour shifts.
• Normal Winter schedule consists or 5, 8-hour shifts.
