Job Description - ER Technician

Department: Emergency Department - Alpine

Supervisor Title: Emergency Department Manager

Location: Alpine, WY

Employment Status: Full-time (36 hours per week) Part-time (24 hours per week)

Compensation: Minimum $6.41, commensurate with experience and certification.

Summary

While upholding the Star Valley Health mission, vision, and values this key position is responsible to provide quality patient care through performing delegated tasks within the realm of certified training efficiently and competently under the direction of RN. The ER Technician provides direct and indirect patient care through protocols set by Star Valley Health to maintain safe and effective patient flow in the Emergency Room. The ER Technician works under the supervision of the ER Nurse and the medical direction of the ER physician and is accountable for providing care within established standards of practice. The ER Technician maintains required certifications and skills by participating in continuing education, practical skills testing, and the re-certification processes set by the state of Wyoming and SV Health. The ER Tech may be a CNA or EMT. This is an at-will position.

Job Duties

  • Receives and carries out orders from the Emergency Room physician within the scope of practice, and performs closed-loop communication with Emergency Room Registered Nurse.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities within their scope of practice as defined by the Wyoming Office of Emergency Medical Services and Star Valley Health policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates within the Emergency Room team (Registered Nurses, and Emergency Room Physicians) to deliver safe and efficient patient care.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Emergency Room team and the patient/family, communicating frequently with the patient/family to update information related to the patient’s condition, status, progress, etc.
  • Stabilizes and extricates injured patients from vehicles at the Emergency Room entrance.
  • Initiates life-saving measures, e.g. opening an airway, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fractures, cervical spine alignment/protections. 
  • Performs EKGs, oxygen administration, and fluid intake and output (I&O) monitoring/documenting.
  • Assists patients to and from vehicles and the Emergency Room.
  • Directs patient flow in reception areas of the Emergency Room.
  • Communicates the condition of the patients presenting to the Emergency Room to the ED nurse.
  • Transports patients from triage to the Emergency Room treatment area at the request of the ED nurse. 
  • Inputs patient data to the Emergency Room tracking board, and performs all necessary data entry of patient information.
  • Responds to patient call lights.
  • Works in conjunction with staff nurses in preparing discharge packets, transfer information, and admission paperwork. 
  • Assures all necessary paperwork is scanned and placed in the electronic medical record. 
  • Perform all housekeeping duties for ER as outlined on daily check sheets.
  • In performing all duties and responsibilities, serves as a model for service excellence and patient satisfaction in the Emergency Room, always upholding SV Health values and principals.
  • Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering, charging, and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  • Stocks rooms and assures outdates are performed monthly.
  • Performs daily quality checks. 
  • Promptly reads and utilizes communication materials, especially emails directed to #ER.
  • Reports occurrences promptly and fully to supervising nurse and/or nursing leadership in a professional manner.
  • Maintains quality assurance standards according to regulatory guidelines of SV Health’s policies and procedures. 
  • Promotes a cooperative and congenial working environment with patients, colleagues, and guests of SV Health.
  • Attends, or is responsible for information presented, in-service meetings, and training.
  • Maintains equipment and environment to safety standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Comply with HIPAA and other federal, state and local regulations as well as maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in client and staff matters
  • Embraces changes and improvements which may enhance the quality, function, and appearance of the patient care experience and facility.

Additional

  • Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use a stethoscope and respond to verbal questions
  • Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone
  • Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of the patient and reading information printed sources and computer screen
  • Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. It requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.

Experience & Education:

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
  • Current Wyoming Emergency Medical Services certification/licensure of EMT-B, EMT-A, EMT-I, paramedic, or CNA license is required.
  • 6 months experience or more required.
