Estimator - High-End Residential, Long Island City

Job Description - Estimator - High-End Residential, Long Island City

Estimator - High-End Residential Construction, Long Island City, NY

Our client is one of New York City's most respected high-end residential construction management firms, long established and still family-run, with its own architectural millwork facility under the same roof as the office.

The firm is adding an Estimator to its preconstruction team. The work is reviewing plans, specifications and bid documents, soliciting and analyzing subcontractor and vendor pricing, running quantity takeoffs, and building budgets and bid packages, flagging risk, constructability problems and cost-saving alternatives before they become somebody else's problem on site. The firm wants someone who has priced this kind of work and, ideally, built it, and who can carry a number from first takeoff through buyout without being walked through it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review plans, specifications and bid documents and develop a complete understanding of scope.
  • Solicit subcontractor and vendor pricing, then analyze and level it.
  • Run quantity takeoffs across trades.
  • Build budgets and assemble bid packages.
  • Flag risk, constructability issues and cost-saving alternatives as they surface.
  • Support the project team at handover so what was estimated is what gets built.

Qualifications

  • Seven or more years in construction, with substantial time on the estimating side.
  • Luxury residential preferred but not required - custom homes, high-end interiors, commercial or luxury retail interiors all count.
  • Strong math and analytical skills, and real command of Excel.
  • A bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering is preferred.
  • The judgment to know where a number is light, where the risk sits, and what a constructability problem costs once it reaches the field.

Compensation and benefits

  • $130,000 to $165,000, depending on experience.
  • Medical through Anthem BCBS, with three plans to choose from, effective the first of the month following 60 days. Dental through Guardian and vision through VSP.
  • On the HSA plan the company contributes $100 a month at the employee-only tier and $150 a month with a spouse or family.
  • Life and AD&D of $10,000 and company-paid long-term disability, both tied to electing medical.
  • A 401(k) opening the first of the month after you start, with a 25% match on the first 4% you defer.
  • 15 days of paid time off covering vacation, sick and personal. Eight company holidays plus two floating days.
  • FSA, HSA, pre-tax commuter benefits and an employee assistance program.
