Position Purpose:

The primary purpose for this position is to oversee the operations, maintenance, and security of the Museum during evening hours. This role supports the Director of Facilities by ensuring that the Museum remains safe, clean, and operations outside of business hours. 

Essential Functions/Accountabilities: 

  •  Assists the Director of Facilities with the managing, scheduling, and performance (as directed) the duties related to the upkeep, cleanliness, and scheduled maintenance of KDM systems – including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, alarms, and all other systems of the building and associated equipment during the evening hours of the museum. 
  •  Prepares and reviews maintenance reports related to the upkeep of installed systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, alarms and other systems related to the building and associated equipment. 
  •  Directs, manages, recruits, motivates and evaluates assigned facilities associates to include scheduling, paid time off and overall performance.  
  •  Ensures both public and non-public areas are kept in a clean, orderly and safe condition at all times. 
  •  Is available to and responds to emergency maintenance requests during assigned work shift and after-hours security and safety concerns of the museum. 
  •  Manage and maintain appropriate levels of supplies needed for the daily operation of the museum. 
  •  Establish goals for assigned facilities associates and provides both short term and long-term goals to ensure the museum is presented in the best possible condition. 
  •  Manages and coordinates the setup, breakdown, and maintenance of events that occur at the museum. 
  •  The Evening Assistant Facilities Manager will be expected to work an evening schedule that meets the operational needs of the museum. 
  •  Reviews all museum policies, procedures and standard operating procedures to maintain industry standards. 
  •  This individual may be required to mitigate biological hazards and will utilize proper personal protection equipment (PPE) as such. 
  •  All other duties as assigned.  

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Associate or Technical degree preferred.
  • Must demonstrate working knowledge of the following building trades and equipment: electrical, plumbing, boilers, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, plaster, painting, and other finishes.
  • Must have working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety procedures applicable to ongoing maintenance standards and project management.
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA, federal, state, and local established safety principles and standards.
  • Knowledge of ADA accessibility standards
  • Must be able to sufficiently pass a criminal background check. 
  • Shall obtain and maintain a First Aid, CPR, and AED certification within 90 days of employment.
  • 2-3+ years of facilities operations and/or custodial experience; in a cultural or museum setting preferred.
  • 1+ years of supervisory or team lead experience.

Work Schedule:

  • Approximately 40 hours per week, hours may vary (open all days of the week).
  • All team members are required to work additional hours during Derby season. This includes but is not limited to working shifts on Thurby, Oaks, Derby, and the Sunday of Derby weekend. All team members are also required to work the week of the National FFA conference and Breeder’s Cup (when held in Louisville). 

  

Working Conditions: 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk, and climb stairs. This individual will be required to lift packages up to 50 pounds and be able work on ladders and other elevated surfaces. The employee is required to have non-standard workday hours during the spring and fall sessions. All indoor spaces are air-conditioned, although some job duties may take place outside, or in another non-climate-controlled space. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a crowded work area. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to navigate a crowded area and handle a challenging workload.

  All employees of the Museum are employed on an at-will basis. This means that the Museum retains the right to terminate any employee at any time, for any reason, with or without notice. Conversely, employees are free to terminate their relationship with the Museum at any time; however, the Museum would appreciate it if employee would provide at least a two-week notice as a courtesy. The Kentucky Derby Museum is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
