Job Description - Executive Director Fair Lawn, NJ

Position Overview:

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management and administration of Congregation Shomrei Torah. This includes overseeing the business office, accounting, synagogue events, religious events, social media, fundraising, and maintenance staff. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors, Rabbi, Youth Director, and other key stakeholders to ensure the synagogue’s mission and goals are met efficiently and effectively.

Shomrei Torah is an Orthodox Jewish congregation in Fair Lawn, New Jersey , is a dynamic and inclusive community dedicated to Modern Orthodox Judaism. Our synagogue offers a range of religious services, educational programs, and community events, balancing commitment to Jewish law with engagement in the modern world. We aim to foster a sense of belonging and promote Jewish values through worship, learning, and community service.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Office Management:

Oversee daily operations of the business office.

Ensure efficient and effective administrative support for all synagogue functions.

Develop and implement operational policies and procedures.

Accounting and Financial Oversight:

Manage all financial activities, including budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting.

Work with the finance committee to develop and monitor annual budgets.

Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.

Oversee payroll and benefits administration.

Synagogue and Religious Events:

Coordinate and oversee all synagogue events, including religious services, holidays, and lifecycle events.

Collaborate with the Senior Rabbi to ensure the smooth execution of religious services and programs.

Manage event logistics, including scheduling, setup, and communication with participants.

Social Media and Communication:

Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy to enhance the synagogue’s online presence.

Oversee the creation and distribution of newsletters, emails, and other communications.

Maintain and update the synagogue’s website with current information and events.

Fundraising and Development:

Develop and implement fundraising strategies to support the synagogue’s financial goals.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners.

Plan and execute fundraising events and campaigns.

Maintenance Staff Supervision:

Oversee the maintenance and custodial staff to ensure the synagogue’s facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained.

Coordinate maintenance schedules and address any facility-related issues promptly.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field.

Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within a religious or nonprofit organization.

Strong leadership and management skills with a proven ability to lead a diverse team.

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in financial management and accounting principles.

Experience with social media management and digital communication.

Proven fundraising and development experience.

Knowledge of Jewish customs, traditions, and religious practices, particularly within the Modern Orthodox framework, is highly desirable.

Experience in ShulCloud and Quickbooks is a plus.

Personal Attributes:

High level of integrity and commitment to the synagogue’s mission and values.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.
