Job Description - Expanded Learning Programs- Beacon Director

Job Description:

Reports To: Senior Program Manager

Purpose: Expanded learning programs are structured educational opportunities that occur outside the traditional school day, combining academic support, enrichment activities, and skill-building to enhance students’ overall learning and development. The Beacon Director is responsible for providing strong leadership, as well as possessing knowledge, fiscal, and administrative skills to support and manage their site. The Beacon Director will lead program design and implementation, supervise staff, and collaborate with school leadership and community partners to provide a wide range of services that meet community needs. The Beacon Director will also co-lead the community school effort using the SFUSD Community School Framework and the Beacon Model.

Benefits:

  • Pay rate: $78,000-82,000, based on regional grant funding and experience 

  • Full-time 40 hours a week, year-round; depends on the district and tier the position falls in 

  • Up to 16 paid BACR holidays and 25 school holidays per year

Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or higher; alternatively, completion of at least 48 college units, or a passing score on the Instructional Aide Exam, Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of supervisory experience in after-school programs or in the fields of education and youth development, with a track record of leading staff, supporting program implementation, and fostering positive youth outcomes.

  • Ability to conduct professional and structured interviews that align with organizational hiring practices and ensure consistency, equity, and fairness in the candidate selection process

  • Ability to maintain high-level professionalism, confidentiality, and demonstrate a high degree of integrity

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines

  • Ability to plan and implement professional development and training for staff

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on clarity, consistency, and responsiveness in all stakeholder relationships

  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and TB test clearance

  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience with a demonstrated ability to effectively lead and support a team of adults

  • Proficiency in technology & computer applications (Word, email, Google Drive, etc.)

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and be capable of standing and walking for extended periods of time

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with students and families

  • Basic English reading proficiency to support students' academic development, enrichment offerings, and school day alignment

 Team Leadership and Development:

  • Provide coordinator and assistant coordinator with strategic input on program development and goal setting to identify strengths and areas for growth.

  • Support the Beacon Team in developing plans to enhance program quality and impact

  • Support coordinator in professionally resolving staff issues, ensuring all parties are informed, and escalating situations where problems are complex

  • Participates in committees to support high-level staff engagement in agency-wide initiatives

  • Provide 1:1 check-ins and ongoing coaching sessions with coordinator

  • Conduct weekly observations to asses program implementation and quality.

Internal and External Relationships:

  • Work closely in collaboration with the school principal, San Francisco Unified School District, San Francisco Beacon Initiative and city partners

  • Foster strong relationships with district partners, ensuring timely communication regarding program updates, challenges, and successes

  • Collaborate with School Leadership to ensure program alignment, adherence to contractual agreements, and meeting community needs

  • Actively participate in partner meetings, committees, and events

  • Work with the Principal and teachers to implement programs that support the school site’s goals for student development and academic achievement and align these activities with the school day

  • Supervise Beacon Program Coordinators (Site Coordinator, Family engagement coordinator, Behavioral Health Specialist)

  • Communicate with the People & Culture (PAC) team to ensure smooth operations and prevent staff issues

  • Engage in DEIB efforts to ensure these values are embedded in program operations and team culture

  •  Attend professional conferences to stay informed about industry trends and network with potential partners, subcontractors, and community organizations

Administrative/Fiscal Compliance and Reporting:

  •  Ensure that all program operations are in compliance with district policies and grant requirements

  • Monitor program adherence to safety, compliance, and internal operational protocols, addressing any challenges promptly and effectively

  • Support the interview process by coaching coordinators with materials, best practices and attending interviews as necessary

  • Work closely with the Program Manager and Contracts Department to ensure subcontracts are executed, monitored, and reported accurately

  •  Oversee the approval of timesheets for Coordinators, ensuring accurate tracking of hours worked

  •  Review and approve expenses for Coordinators, ensuring that program spending aligns with budget guidelines and grant requirements Ensure all subcontractor payments are correct and executed in a timely manner

  • Submit all required documentation on time, including program reports, student attendance, monthly narratives, staff evaluations, etc.

  •  Participate in all meetings, workshops, and activities organized by BACR, SFBI, DCYF, SFUSD and ExCEL

  •  Ensure completion of QAP and PQA and SEL PQA as required by our funders

  • Develop, manage, and monitor site budget to ensure funds are allocated appropriately and fully spent down in compliance with grant requirements
