Job Description: Director of Facilities – Pharmacy

Position Summary
The Director of Facilities is responsible for overseeing all aspects of facility management for the pharmacy, including maintenance, safety, regulatory compliance, security, and capital projects. This role ensures that all pharmacy locations—sterile and non-sterile compounding, dispensing, call center, warehouse, and administrative offices—operate in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner to support patient care, operational efficiency, and regulatory readiness.
This position offers a flexible schedule but requires on-call availability to respond to urgent facility and operational issues.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Management & Operations
Oversee day-to-day facilities operations including maintenance, housekeeping, utilities, HVAC, security, landscaping, and vendor management.
Direct the planning, design, and maintenance of pharmacy infrastructure, including sterile compounding cleanrooms, non-sterile labs, warehouses, dispensing areas, and offices.
Lead the design, build, and certification of cleanrooms in compliance with USP <797>, <800>, and ISO standards, including buffer rooms, ante rooms, and hazardous drug areas.
Ensure proper airflow, pressure differentials, HEPA filtration, and material/personnel workflow are incorporated into cleanroom design to maintain sterility and prevent cross-contamination.
Develop and manage preventive maintenance programs for critical pharmacy equipment (e.g., laminar airflow hoods, isolators, HVAC, refrigerators, freezers).

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
Establish and enforce safety programs to ensure a secure environment for staff, patients, and visitors.
Partner with Quality and Compliance to ensure facility conditions meet all accreditation and inspection requirements.
Manage cleanroom certification programs, including semi-annual certification by qualified independent contractors.
Oversee ongoing environmental monitoring programs for viable and non-viable particle testing, surface sampling, and facility cleaning schedules.
Ensure all cleanroom modifications or equipment relocations are followed by appropriate recertification and documentation.
Lead emergency preparedness planning, including fire safety, disaster recovery, and business continuity for facility operations.

Strategic Planning & Capital Projects
Lead facility expansion, renovation, and relocation projects, ensuring alignment with operational growth and regulatory standards.
Oversee space planning, including pharmacy workflow design, storage optimization, and ergonomic considerations.
Manage budgets for facilities operations, capital improvements, and energy/resource conservation initiatives.

Leadership & Collaboration
Lead and mentor the facilities team, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and operational excellence.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Supply Chain, IT, HR, and Quality to ensure facility needs are aligned with organizational priorities.
Serve as primary liaison with contractors, engineers, architects, inspectors, and regulatory authorities.

Non-Negotiable Requirements (Must-Haves)

Industry Background: Minimum 5–10 years in pharmaceuticals, with direct experience in facilities operations for cleanrooms, compounding pharmacies, or hospitals.
Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of FDA regulations, USP <797>, <795>, <800>, state board of pharmacy, DEA, and OSHA standards.
Cleanroom Expertise: Proven track record with cleanroom design, build, certification, and environmental monitoring.
Certifications & Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with ISO standards, PDA guidelines, HVAC systems, and related technical standards.
Tools/Software: Proficiency in Excel, Visio, MS Project, Smartsheets, AutoCAD (or similar project and facilities management tools).
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have
Bilingual in Spanish (a strong plus).
Experience leading multi-site or large-scale healthcare facility operations.
Willingness to relocate (if local talent cannot be identified).

Key Competencies
Strategic and operational mindset with the ability to balance long-term planning with day-to-day execution.
