Job Description - Facilities Maintenance Worker

The City of Ottawa is currently accepting applications for a Facilities Maintenance Worker. Under the supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor, the Facilities Maintenance Worker performs  hands on work in maintaining municipal buildings and surrounding grounds.  An employee in this position is responsible for routine building maintenance and custodial needs.  This position performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, room setup, cleaning and sanitation.  Work is performed in accordance with prescribed practices and little supervision of daily duties is provided. 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Regularly services mechanical systems
  • Operates a variety of motorized equipment
  • Employs and follows all safety regulations
  • Understands and performs operator-level maintenance on equipment used
  • Performs minor repairs such as light bulbs, ballasts and bathroom fixtures 
  • Performs daily tasks including: trash, dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, etc.
  • Removes snow from walks and steps and treats for ice
  • Sets up tables and chairs for programs and meeting activities
  • Cleans restrooms and replenish supplies, and cleans drinking fountain
  • Maintains exterior grounds, to include walks, parking area, trees and scrubs
  • Runs errands as needed
Ancillary Job Functions:
  • Obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies
  • Assist other departments and perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: (Combination of education, training, and experience will be considered)
  • High School Diploma or GED required some college preferred.   
  • Three to five years of general maintenance and custodian experience preferred. 
  • Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (not all inclusive)
  • Requires the ability to speak and understand English. 
  • This position requires general knowledge of woodworking, equipment maintenance, cleaning techniques, building maintenance, lawn care, and insecticides. 
  • Must have the ability to operate a lawn mower, fertilizer spreader, hand tools, buffer, shampooer, and other related cleaning equipment. 
  • Must work courteously and establish successful working relationships with entities, employees, City officials, businesses and the public and use of good professional judgments, honesty, and integrity in decision-making.
  • Limited supervision is provided by the Building Maintenance Supervisor and job-related decisions are periodically reviewed.  Employee is responsible for providing oversight of subordinate personnel. 
  • Extensive contact with other City departments and contact with the general public.
Work Environment:
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or high/dangerous places.
  • May be exposed to inclement outdoor weather, vibration, oils, airborne particles/fumes, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals, or loud noise levels.

  • Must be able to talk, hear, feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.
  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement and manual dexterity.
  • Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, ability to identify and distinguish colors, and precise hand-eye coordination.
  • May be required to occasionally lift 75 or more pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Range:                                 $20.70-$22.77

Hours:                                 6:00 am -3:00 pm  Monday-Friday

Residency:     Regular full-time employees are required to establish and maintain residency within a driving distance of 35 miles of Ottawa City Hall within one year from hire.
