Are you a skilled trades professional who thrives in a dynamic environment? We’re hiring for two Facility Maintenance Specialist positions! Join our team as a Facility Maintenance Specialist and play a vital role in maintaining and improving the physical plant systems of Snake River Correctional Institution. These roles combine hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities, ensuring safety, security, and operational excellence.

About the Job – Your Role

As a Facility Maintenance Specialist, you will:

  • Lead and Train: Coordinate, instruct, and mentor AIC (Adults in Custody) work crews in maintenance, repair, and safe tool operation.
  • Ensure Safety & Security: Conduct frisk and area searches, maintain controlled item inventories, monitor work areas, and enforce institutional rules and security protocols.
  • Perform Skilled Trades Work:
    • General Maintenance: Repair windows, maintain equipment, and handle installations.
    • Carpentry & Construction: Repair and install flooring, doors, cabinets, and concrete structures.
    • Painting & Welding: Maintain interior/exterior surfaces and metal structures.
    • Lock Repair: Maintain mechanical lock systems.
    • Grounds Maintenance: Keep outdoor areas and landscaping equipment in top condition.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Develop and maintain a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for all systems and equipment.
  • Project Management: Oversee construction projects, review blueprints, estimate materials, and ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Escort Duties: Safely escort vendors and contractors within the institution.

This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of: a) general building maintenance; b) carpentry; c) electrical; d) mechanical; e) painting; or f) plastering experience.

A journeyman's license/card in any of the above trades will substitute for this experience. Be sure a copy of your journeyman's license/card is attached to your application.

Requested Skills

  • Journey-level proficiency in carpentry, welding, painting, and general maintenance.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for systems and equipment.
  • Experience managing construction and repair projects, reviewing blueprints, estimating materials, and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Strong capability to coordinate, instruct, and evaluate AIC work crews while enforcing safety and institutional policies.
  • Knowledge and application of security protocols, including conducting searches, maintaining controlled inventories, and monitoring work areas.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing complex systems and equipment such as locks, HVAC components, pumps, and kitchen appliances.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a prison, housing maximum, close, medium and minimum-security AICs. The AICs have the potential of becoming angry, hostile, abusive and aggressive which may increase the risk of employees to encounter physical injury, death, and/or being taken hostage.  There is an inherent responsibility to provide assistance through recall and/or reassignment during AIC unrest and other emergency situations occurring at the institution.

SRCI has over 1 million square feet of building space; walking long distances to get to a workstation to perform the work will be required. The work locations vary from new to old building structures there also may be towers, walls, service tunnels, pipe chases, electrical chases, etc.  All locations have multiple floors and tiered AIC housing which require the use of stairs.  Walking to get to assigned workstation or in the performance of work will be required, this may be long distances.

Working conditions in service tunnels and pipe chases may include: poor ventilation, high temperatures, poor lighting conditions, etc. Workers may be exposed to or work in inclement weather conditions, which can include rain, standing water, snow, ice, etc.  Some work may involve walking and working on uneven ground.  When working on, near or around storm drains and sewer systems, the worker may be exposed to contaminants.  When working on, near or around heat exchangers, steam piping, and boilers, there is a possibility of burns from hot pipes and exposure to boiler chemicals.  Work may include frequent lifting and carrying of equipment (light, medium, and heavy).  At times, may work alone, in small groups, or in large groups of both employees and AIC’s depending upon operational needs.  The use of hand tools, powered hand tools, stationary and portable power equipment, painting equipment, ladders, platforms, scaffolding, power lifts, etc. may be required.

At some locations work may include being near to and possibly working with asbestos and/or lead based paint.  Workers will be required to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety programs (Respiratory Protection, Asbestos, etc.) as dictated by the work and location.

Requirements for Employment

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
