About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to the Facility Maintenance Manager I at a multi-custody female correctional facility, this position is responsible for implementing and maintaining a comprehensive, preventive, and routine maintenance program that provides the preventative and routine maintenance at a level that will ensure the facility is maintained properly with particular emphasis placed on safety and security of the facility. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Supervising, planning, reviewing and evaluating the work of subordinates as well as provide on-the-job and outside training, counselling and administering discipline to subordinates, and training, directing and supervising subordinates to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

2. Developing and adjusting to the shorter-term assignments, schedules, and priorities.

3. Making final technical decisions in a variety of trades, requisition and purchase material and supplies and maintaining stock control procedures for tools, parts, and supplies.

4. Advising management concerning the technical aspects of maintaining, replacing or renovating equipment and facilities.

5. Providing maintenance of high voltage electrical systems, special or unique facilities, telecommunications, operation of water and/or wastewater treatment plants.

6. Acting as the primary liaison to designers, contractors, local officials, and regulatory agencies and technically representing the facility/agency and participating in the overall management of the facility Maintenance Department.

7. Working under limited to minimal administrative and limited technical supervision.

8. Inspecting the facility/agency regularly for maintenance needs and safety hazards.


(Salary Range: $52,592 - $92,036)

  • Documented supervisory experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of buildings and facilities.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC14. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Anson Correctional Institution

Anson Correctional Institution houses female offenders in medium and close custody housing units. Anson CI offers a wide variety of educational, vocational, and training programs. Correction Enterprises operates the offender packaging operation at Anson, a partnership with Union Supply Direct through the Prison Industry Enhancement Program (PIE). Family and friends can order a package of goods from a pre-approved shopping list to send to an offender. Orders are packaged by offenders and shipped quarterly.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND four (4) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance or construction including experience in at least three (3) building or mechanical trades including one (1) year of supervisory experience in construction, maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
