SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Nursing, the Nurse Manager works collaboratively as a member of the patient care team to provide consistent, high quality, evidence-based care to patients of the health center. The Nurse Manager is accountable to perform in accordance with the standards set by the American Nurses Association, Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, and the health center’s policies and procedures.
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Nurse Manager supervises all nursing staff in their designated department and provides administrative and clinical leadership, expertise and oversight. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrates clinical leadership and serves as a resource to staff
- Serves as an educator/leader/role model and leads by example in fostering a collaborative environment
- Manages and participates in the mentoring and training of nursing staff (RN’s, LPN’s and MA’s)
- Identifies educational needs and participates in education of nursing staff
- Conducts huddles in which nursing team issues are identified and updates are provided
- Monitors and contributes to the daily and monthly compliance for the unit (med room, code cart, negative pressure room, environmental rounds)
- Prepares annual and periodic reports as required.
- Completes employee performance reviews within a timely manner, and in accordance with DotHouse Health policy. Provides ongoing assessment and feedback to all employees; develops performance improvement plans and corrective action plans where appropriate.
- Responsible for hiring, disciplining and terminating nursing staff in their respective department within the prescribed policies of DotHouse Health. Interprets and enforces DotHouse Health policies for all employees.
- Responsible for scheduling of nursing staff (RN’s, LPN’s and MA’s). Evaluates and approves schedule changes and requests for time off, ensuring that the staffing needs of the nursing department are met. Collaborates with Nurse Managers in other departments regarding daily staffing changes to ensure needs are met.
- Assesses the adequacy of staffing levels for clinical nursing staff and makes recommendations to management regarding additional staffing needs or role changes. Assigns and monitors staff workload to ensure maximum productivity; creates an atmosphere and conditions that motivate employees to work at optimal efficiency.
- Oversees payroll and maintains system to document employee absenteeism.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives
The Nurse Manager performs the role of the Registered Nurse in addition to management responsibilities. The nurse manager is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and coordination of care for patients and their families within the health center. The Nurse Manager performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities.
These responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Direct the practice of medical assistants and LPN’s
- Reviews and communicates test results per protocol
- Completes accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record
- Performs patient triage
- Provides patient education
- Administers medication, immunizations and treatments as ordered
- Performs charge nurse responsibilities
- Assists with management of urgent and emergent patient care situations
- Assists with or performs procedures
- Manage communication from internal and external sources
- Attends nursing and organizational meetings and participates in QI initiatives
- Provides safe, ethical, evidence based and culturally competent care
- Floats to other nursing departments as need arises
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred
Experience:
· 2 years’ experience in Adult and/or Pediatric acute care medical/surgical setting.
· Minimum of one year Ambulatory Care experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Valid RN license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Current BLS certification.
Software/Hardware: Must be proficient and have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.). Experience with EPIC preferred.
