Family Support Peer

Are you interested in helping families navigate supports and services in the peer realm? If so, the Family Support Peer - (SUD) position maybe for you. We are looking for someone with an interest in assisting individuals through their recovery process while using an integrated focus of family support.

Independent Living, Inc. is a consumer-directed, cross-disability advocacy and service organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals living in the Hudson Valley region and we seek to hire a Family Support Peer - (SUD) to provide services while helping the families and individuals understand the progression of addiction, empower family members and navigate insurance barriers and treatment systems. Lived experience with substance use recovery either personally or through a family member/loved one who has gone through recovery and be comfortable with self-disclosure as needed is preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide Community Reinforcement Approach to Family Training (CRAFT) services
• Help families and individuals:

1. understand the progression of addiction
2. empower family members
3. navigate insurance barriers and treatment systems

• Help individuals create individual recovery service plans based on recovery goals. Steps to accomplish this includes:

1. Using recovery-oriented tools to help individuals address challenges.
2. Assisting individuals to build their own self-directed wellness plans.
3. Assisting individuals with accessing benefits, entitlements, legal assistance, civic restoration, transportation support, health management, stable housing, and education and employment connections.
4. Supporting individuals in their decision-making.
5. Advocating with individuals for what they need.
6. Supporting individuals in crisis.
7. Advocating for multiple pathways to recovery and engaging in (Medication Assisted Treatment) MAT program partnerships.
8. Proactively engaging families and individuals on how to access and navigate the substance use treatment system and negotiate insurance barriers to treatment. 

• Facilitate family support groups.
• Will be required to attend and actively participate in tabling events in the community
• Attend and actively participate in all meetings and training sessions provided by Independent Living, Inc. and specific to the job responsibilities of the position.
• Upon completing the required training, train community members and participants in Narcan.
• Assist with program coverage due to extended absences.

SHIFT:

• Monday through Friday 9am-5pm.

PAY RATE:

• $22.55/hr - $23.45/hr

• High School diploma/equivalent plus equivalent years of experience (bachelor’s degree in human services, preferred but not needed) plus two years of peer coaching or advocacy experience.
• Lived experience with substance use recovery either personally or through a family member/loved one who has gone through recovery and be comfortable with self-disclosure as needed, required
• Strong data entry and computer software skills.
• Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
• Must have good time management skills and be self-directing, especially if there is any downtime.
• Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
• Two years of Recovery Coaching experience or family support experience preferred.
• Certified Recovery Peer Advocate and/or New York Certified Peer Specialist, preferred.
• Must complete approved advocacy training programs within the first six months of employment.
• Must have a working knowledge of the recovery process and be willing to promote multi-pathways to recovery.
• Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of ASL, a plus.
