Job Description - FCLS Paralegal


  

The Paralegal works closely with the Nashville Managing Attorney (MA), the Nashville tax attorney, and the Family Centered Legal Solutions (FCLS) Project Manager. As a paralegal, this position will support the MA’s casework in employment law and tax attorney’s casework by performing intakes, drafting letters and other legal documents, managing files, attending & coordinating community outreach events, and assisting with day-to-day client interactions. For our FCLS grant, this position will manage detailed project plans concerning resources and timeframes for projects. They will assist in the planning and coordination of legal clinics, community outreach events, and volunteers across Legal Aid’s 48-county service area. This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with, one or more grants. Personnel must adhere to the goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the grant(s), and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.


Requirements

  

Support attorney casework by scheduling client meetings and phone calls, drafting letters, conducting legal research, and other administrative tasks. 

Maintain accurate and orderly client files for attorneys, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines. 

· Support the casework of attorneys as assigned.

Produce and analyze data reports from the case management system and assist with the preparation of grant reports.

Serve as an administrative point of contact for the program both internally and externally on matters pertaining to scheduling, availability, legal clinics, outreach events, and general inquiries, as determined by the supervisor.

Assist with document verification, coordinate intakes, and provide backup for the FCLS Project Manager.

Build and maintain positive relationships with partner organizations that support the client population.

Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LAS staff.

Qualifications:

Associate’s degree, bachelor’s preferred, or 3 years of commensurate experience.

2 years prior experience working in a law office, court, social service agency, or related field. 

Experience or demonstrated interest in working with low-income people.

Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software.

- Familiarity with legal research tools and databases, like Westlaw and LexisNexis, is a plus.

- Strong organizational skills, prioritization of large workloads, and meticulous attention to detail.

Effective oral and written communication skills, including in client interviews and helping people in crisis. 

Proficiency in the use of office equipment such as copiers, scanners, postage machines, etc.

Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is a plus.
