GovFirst is seeking to hire multiple Ferry Crew Oilers to support our ferry operations across various locations in Virginia which includes Bristol, Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Newport News, Suffolk, Surry, Salem, Lynchburg, Staunton, Culpeper & Richmond, VA within the Transportation Operations Division. The Ferry Crew Oiler will be responsible for ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and maintenance of ferry machinery and decks, assisting with emergency operations, and providing support to ferry staff and passengers.
Safety & Compliance
Demonstrate and practice safety behaviors at all times and report any safety incidents promptly.
Act with integrity and stewardship, adhering to conflict of interest policies and ethical standards.
Respond effectively to emergency situations and assist with traffic management as needed.
Record temperatures, pressures, and ensure equipment operates within proper parameters.
Assist with machinery starts, stops, fueling, and repairs under direction.
Maintain and clean engine rooms, decks, and surfaces, ensuring assigned areas are free of debris.
Monitor and report tank levels, line-ups, and other operational data to the Chief Engineer.
Provide information and assistance to the public.
Guide vehicle operators safely during boarding and departure processes.
Serve as Emergency Helmsman and assist as a crew member when required.
Education & Certification
High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training accepted.
Valid Driver’s License in good standing.
Minimum Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) endorsed as Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED).
Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
Must obtain and maintain 1st Aid, CPR, and Emergency Helmsman certifications.
Knowledge of diesel engine operations and basic electrical systems.
Experience in marine environments or as a sailor, including ferry crew experience.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and coordinate tasks with crew members.
Ability to respond to emergency situations and interact effectively with passengers and staff.
18 years or older, with drug screening, background check, and fingerprint-based criminal history records check.
Completion of required VDOT/industry training.
90-day probation period.
All-season, all-hour operating conditions with prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting.
May be subject to short or no-notice assignments.
Frequent interaction with the public and emergency response duties during inclement weather or disaster situations.
