Fiber Cable Splicer

Introduction:

The Fiber Cable Splicer plays a vital role in ensuring quality and timely deliveries of fiber services along with additional services to Northcentral Connect customers.

Supervisor: Technical Service Manager

Knowledge/Education Requirements:

1. Proficient with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers, and scope.


2. Ability to adhere to local and federal regulations and company policies.


3. Ability to carry, climb and operate an extension ladder.


4. Ability to climb poles using gaffs and climbing belt as needed preferred.


5. Ability to perform job from high places.


6. Ability to operate aerial lift platforms and bucket trucks safely.


7. Ability to identify energized facilities on electric poles to maintain safe distances from them.


8. Ability to perform basic first aid and bucket truck rescue procedures.


9. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate minimum.


10. Must have good verbal and written communication skills.


11. Ability to interact effectively with other team members.


12. Basic understanding of Outlook, Excel and Word.


13. Must be able to work independently without supervision.


14. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid commercial driver’s license Class B or greater.


15. Ability to tow, back, and maintain a splice trailer.


16. Ability to learn and work with new technologies. 


17. Must possess or acquire knowledge of the communication and fiber distribution system in the service area, such as location of lines, splice points, recovery loops, electronic equipment, etc.


18. Knowledge of ANSI, NEC, and NESC specifications, rules and standards.


19. Must possess strong computer skills and ability to lean new software and computer-related skills.


20. Must have proven ability to plan and organize work to meet deadlines, all with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.


21. Must have the ability to perform the duties of the position in a proper, safe, and economical manner.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

1. Completes fusion splicing of various types and sizes of fiber optic cable including single mode, multimode, stranded and ribbon, including activities to complete outside plant fiber management and installation.


2. Performs splicing rearrangements on existing facilities in buried, underground, aerial and building work locations.


3. Constructs proper splice cases pressurized and non-pressurized, using all types and sizes of cable, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.


4. Able to install mid-sheath splices on various types and sizes of fiber optic cable.


5. Testing and troubleshooting fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier and scope.


6. Provide engineering with detailed reports of field splicing activity.


7. Work flexible hours, afterhours work which would include nights and weekends to troubleshoot outages, restore services, and cut-over facilities. 


8. Train other Fiber Cable Splicers in the completion of job-related responsibilities. Develop job-based knowledge, skills, and abilities in other employees. 


9. Operate all types of vehicles and associated equipment.


10. Must adequately stock line materials on vehicle and check in and out materials for jobs to be done as assigned.


11. Reviews and interprets existing underground and aerial cable records and provide as-built records, on maps or in the field.


12. Makes precise recommendations for changes in running fiber optic cables or provides input into construction methodologies.


13. Performs all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines including compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations and safety manuals.

1. Participate in other related activities and special projects as may be required or assigned.
   
   

Physical Demands:

Occasional lifting in excess of 50 lbs. and frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.  Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.  Work requires the ability to reach, handle and feel with fingers.  Must be able to climb (ascending and descending), using the feet and legs and/or hands and arms; must have sense of balance; must be able to stoop; kneel’ crouch and crawl.  Must be able to reach’ handle’ work primarily with fingers; and feel.  Must be able to talk and hear.  Must be able to obtain impressions through the eyes and the shape, size, distance, motion and color or other characteristic of objects.  Must possess acuity, far and near, depth perception, field of vision, accommodation, and color vision.  Must be able to speak clearly and communicate effectively in order to interact with company employees and members.
