Job Description - Fiber Splicing and Testing Technician
This position plays a vital role in ensuring the successful delivery of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services to our customers. The primary responsibility is splicing and testing newly constructed fiber networks, both aerial and buried, to guarantee high-quality service. You will perform fiber splicing and testing using an OTDR, Optical Light Source (OLS), and Optical Power Meter (OPM), along with other industry-standard equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform fiber optic splicing on both single-mode and multi-mode fibers for new construction projects.
Properly place and secure mid-sheath splices for aerial and underground fiber installations.
Conduct testing and troubleshooting of fiber using OTDR, OLS, OPM, fiber identifiers, and scopes.
Install and test fiber cross-connects in communication cabinets and enclosures.
Place and test jumpers within communication cabinets and ensure proper signal transmission.
Collaborate with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design teams to execute fiber splicing as directed.
Work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as part of an on-call rotation when necessary.
Train on the safe operation of a bucket truck under supervision as required.
Maintain a strong work ethic and a positive attitude, delivering high productivity with minimal supervision.
Adhere to all company safety protocols and construction best practices.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
1+ year(s) of experience preferred in fiber optic splicing, particularly in mid-sheath splicing for new construction.
Basic knowledge of safety construction practices and proficiency with hand tools, fusion splicers, OTDRs, OLS, OPM, fiber identifiers, and scopes.
Ability to safely drive company vehicles as needed.
Experience Preferred:
1 year or more in fiber splicing and testing, with experience in both aerial and buried installations.
Demonstrated ability to perform and troubleshoot mid-sheath splices effectively.
Additional Information:
Work environment includes outdoor work at various locations, including new construction sites.
This position may require the use of a bucket truck for aerial fiber splicing operations.
