As the Fiber Technician I – you will install, maintain, and test complex fiber optic telecommunications, such as broadband, mobile, and digital systems. The job functions also include but are not limited to:
- Installation: Fiber splicers are responsible for installing fiber optic cables in various environments, including underground conduits, aerial lines, and inside buildings. They may work in teams to lay out cables according to blueprints and specifications provided by engineers or project managers.
- Splicing: The core responsibility of a fiber splicer is to perform splicing operations on fiber optic cables. This involves carefully stripping the protective coating from the fibers, aligning them, and fusing them together using specialized equipment such as fusion splicers or mechanical splicers. They must ensure that the splices are strong, low-loss, and meet industry standards for performance. The minimum production standard would be12 splices completed in an hour. (fusion SM fiber)
- Testing and Troubleshooting: After splicing, fiber splicers conduct thorough testing of the connections to verify signal strength, clarity, and integrity. They use optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs) and other testing equipment to identify any issues or discrepancies in the network. In case of problems, they will need to troubleshoot, locate and rectify issues promptly to restore connectivity.
- Documentation: Fiber splicers maintain detailed records of splicing activities, including splice locations, fiber counts, and test results. Accurate documentation is essential for future maintenance, repairs, and network expansion projects.
- Safety and Compliance: Fiber splicers adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations to ensure a safe working environment and reliable network performance. They may work with hazardous materials and operate heavy machinery, so following safety guidelines is paramount.
- Collaboration: Fiber splicers often collaborate with other professionals such as network engineers, project managers, and field technicians to coordinate installation projects, troubleshoot issues, and optimize network performance.
- Continuous Learning: Given the rapid advancements in fiber optic technology, fiber splicers are expected to stay updated on the latest industry trends, equipment, and techniques through ongoing training and professional development.
