Job Description - Field Organizer

Summary: 


The FIELD ORGANIZER (FO) works to propel our civic engagement campaigns and electoral movement building work aimed at growing the political power of young people and supports regional power building strategies for both Power California, its sibling 501(c)(4) entity, PowerCA Action, and the 501(c)(4)’s political action committee, Youth Power PAC. Collaborating closely with the Field Director (their direct supervisor), the Data Strategist, the Narrative and Communications Team, , r and other department leads, the FO coordinates year-round and seasonal issue campaigns, volunteer outreach strategies and civic engagement programs across the state.. This position works closely with other field staff to drive our statewide work and impact, particularly as one of the direct supervisors to temporary/seasonal campaigns. The FO also works closely with communications and narrative strategy staff to weave these strategies into statewide coalition  field campaign work. The individual in this role must be passionate about leadership development and field campaign coordination with young people to make a bigger and bolder electoral impact to secure a California for all.



Alliance Field Campaigns (Seasonal - Varies)  (50% of time) 



  • Coordinates implementation of voter contact programs, with Power California Alliance partner organizations, continuously tracking progress toward goals and analyzing effectiveness of field and campaign strategies in order to identify and recommend necessary pivots to supervisor 

  • Assists and supports the local field leads at Alliance partner organizations to set up and run voter outreach programs 

  • Supports with maintaining relationships with local field leads at Alliance partner organizations and building their electoral campaign capacity 

  • Provides technical assistance, training, and troubleshooting support for alliance field leads during campaigns 

  • Tracks field needs of Alliance partner organizations, supports with distributing campaign assets and resources, and develops training curriculum as needed

  • Helps supervisor in producing campaign evaluation reports that communicate the story and impact of field campaigns 

  • Coordinates consistent communication with local field leads and campaign coordinators at Alliance partner organizations to collectivize updates and information and ensure campaigns operate smoothly and cohesively



POCA Regional Field Campaigns (Seasonal Varies) (10% of time) 



  • Coordinates  implementation of internal voter contact programs via Independent Expenditure or Vendor Fee For Service by continuously tracking progress toward goals and analyzing effectiveness of field and campaign strategies in order to identify and recommend necessary pivots to supervisor 

  • Leads year round internal organizing teams to implement field programs as needed in priority regions these may including local campaign programs, voter reg, and/or issue-based/gotv election programs 

  • Utilizes basic Political Data Inc. system skills to ensure campaign backend data support for canvassers 

  • Supports team leads in running a phone banking and/or walk team to achieve voter contact goals

  • Supports with implementing the strategy implementation of voter targeting and voter engagement 

  • Implements compliance rules and regulations throughout the campaign and ensures timely reporting of expenditures 

  • Provides technical assistance, training, updates and troubleshooting support for local field leads during campaigns



Alliance Capacity Building (30% of time)



  • Supports leading  Statewide Alliance training and leadership development initiatives.

  • Supports building a pathway of leadership for BIPOC leaders to run effective electoral campaigns 

  • Supports leading POCA academies/trainings as it relates to internal field programs, alliance field programs, and organizing plans 

  • Cultivates a culture of strong communication, peer learning, and an integrated approach to power building strategies (for volunteer recruitment,, communications, and field campaigns) with the local campaign coordinators and fields leads at Power California and Alliance partner organizations

  • Supports the Field Team and the Alliance to align statewide and regional field work with overall organization goals 

  • Support the Field Director and other department leads in 

  • Attend Alliance Coalition meetings and support in facilitation and coordination

  • Provides one-on-one field coaching and technical assistance to leads 

  • Handles coordination of trainings for field leads on grassroots organizing and integrated voter engagement methods



Staff Supervision (Seasonal - Varies) (20% of time) 



  • Recruits, hires, trains, and oversees short-term campaign workers when needed

  • Is responsible for carrying out all required HR-, payroll- and finance-related supervisory duties in a timely, accurate, and legally-compliant manner 

  • In coordination with supervisor, ensures coverage for critical functions of unfilled directly-reporting positions, consulting with other members of the field team as necessary



Minimum Qualifications and Experience: 



  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in electoral organizing including voter contact campaigns, planning and implementing voter outreach, phone banking, and door-to-door canvassing 

  • Familiarity with grassroots organizing, advocacy and electoral engagement techniques

  • Nonprofit, fundraising, 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4), grass roots, lobbying experience 

  • Experience in youth organizing strategy and leadership development preferred 

  • Strong time management, organizational, and work planning skills; ability to adjust work activity as needed and manage multiple projects according to timelines 

  • Experience working/partnering with young people of color, low-income, immigrants and refugees and/or LGBTQIA+ communities 

  • Experience using popular education methods for training and facilitation strongly desired 

  • Must be computer-literate, with basic skills in word processing, spreadsheets, power point, web/email applications, and other work-related applications; Macintosh knowledge preferred 

  • Works well independently and in collaboration with others 

  • Excellent cross-cultural skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds, including, but not limited to, high school students, young adults, and community and elected leaders 

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail 

  • Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, and facilitation skills; able to communicate in an outgoing, enthusiastic and persuasive manner

  • Able to understand organizational goals, be aware of opportunities and challenges, and take initiative to achieve goals; works well independently 

  • Flexible, team-oriented approach to problem-solving 

  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential, exercise good judgment, stay aware of others’ needs

  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment; independent, proactive and able to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and changing priorities; comfortable with on-the-ground learning 

  • Commitment to embodying the change we seek; able to act with integrity, compassion, and openness to feedback 

  • Bilingual or multilingual with English-Spanish skills a plus 

  • Occasional nights and weekends required 

  • If assigned to drive on business, must have unlimited access to a reliable automobile and have the ability to drive; valid California driver’s license and, if driving own car, proof of adequate insurance coverage required 

  • Based in or near Fresno, California (within 25 miles)

  • Has cell phone with adequate data plan and home internet connection with adequate speed

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, at a desk or similar, 60% of the time. Time spent in stationary location includes operating a computer and relevant peripherals and communicating via phone 

  •  While performing the duties of the position, the employee frequently travels by automobile or public transit or works outside and is thus exposed to changing weather conditions 

  • When working inside an office, this position is not exposed to weather conditions 

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate 

  • Regularly required by the duties of this job to move, ascend and descend, remain stationary, position oneself to access and operate machines and/or equipment and supplies, communicate, exchange information and observe details at close and medium range within work surroundings. 

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds over medium distance (20-30 feet). Typically involves moving office supplies, campaign material, event set-up material, and/or PPE



Travel Requirements:



  • Ability to travel frequently, within California and nationally, for periods of up to 7 days at a time, 18 times per year
