Job Description - Field Projects Coordinator

Position Summary:

We are seeking a motivated, field-savvy, and people-oriented Field Projects Coordinator to support the implementation of hands-on riparian and urban restoration, environmental education, and community engagement programs. This role is ideal for someone who thrives outdoors, enjoys working with volunteers and youth, and can confidently manage tools, trailers, and field logistics.

You’ll work at the intersection of restoration ecology, urban forestry, environmental education, and community-based conservation — coordinating seasonal field crews, volunteer events, and school partnerships. If you're a confident communicator, a capable leader in the field, and comfortable hauling a trailer or troubleshooting a weed whacker, we want to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities:

Field Coordination & Implementation

  • Lead and support on-the-ground restoration activities such as riparian and urban tree plantings, tree watering, deer fencing installation, and beaver dam analog (BDA) construction.

  • Operate, load, and haul trailers and field equipment to sites across rural and urban locations.

  • Maintain restoration tools and supplies, ensuring safety and readiness.

Volunteer & Crew Leadership

  • Supervise community volunteers and assist with supervision of seasonal interns and field crews.

  • Co-lead K-12 planting and maintenance events, ensuring a safe, educational, and rewarding experience.

  • Serve as a point of contact for volunteer coordination when necessary.

Environmental Education & Outreach

  • Assist in delivering watershed and restoration-focused education to K-12 classrooms and field-based experiences.

  • Represent the organization at community events, science fairs, and neighborhood meetings to support environmental engagement.

Program Support

  • Collaborate with staff to meet grant deliverables and program goals.

  • Help collect data on restoration projects and provide field updates as needed.

  • Support urban forestry projects and public outreach as part of the SpoCanopy and CoolCanopy Programs.

Ideal Candidate Qualities:

  • People-oriented – Enjoys working with community members, youth, and volunteers of all backgrounds.

  • Independent & team-ready – Can confidently lead projects solo or thrive as part of a small, efficient team.

  • Skilled in the field – Comfortable with physically demanding work, loading/unloading gear, and navigating variable terrain and weather.

  • Technically competent – Able to tow and maneuver trailers, operate basic field equipment, and problem-solve on the go.

  • Environmental knowledge – Has a background or coursework in restoration ecology, forestry, environmental education, or related fields.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in ecological fieldwork, forestry, or environmental restoration.

  • Prior leadership or coordination experience with volunteers, field crews, or students.

  • Must be able to lift and carry 50+ lbs. repeatedly and work in rugged outdoor conditions.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to remote field sites (mileage reimbursed).

  • Familiarity with trailering or willingness to learn quickly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in environmental education or youth engagement.

  • Basic plant ID skills and understanding of riparian ecosystems.

Work Schedule & Conditions:

  • Most work is performed outdoors in variable weather, including hot summers, chilly winters on the mountain and cold early spring/fall days.

  • Flexible schedule required — occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends for community events or plantings.

  • Office hours available for planning, reporting, and team collaboration.

If you are interested in applying, please submit a resume, cover letter, and three references by August 11th.
