Job Description - Fire Compliance Associate

Cornell University is widely admired as one of the world’s most respected research and teaching institutions. The Department of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) provides comprehensive programs and services to support healthy, safe, and environmentally responsible practices for our world class faculty, staff, students and university community. EHS assists the campus community with compliance and promotes health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

   

Under general supervision from the University Fire Marshal the Fire Compliance Associate will support Fire Protection and Life Safety compliance with daily duties, including events management, fire inspections, liaison with external agencies (e.g., Authority Having Jurisdictions, Fire Departments and NYS OFPC), quality assurance of fire protection systems, system troubleshooting analysis, plan review and acceptance testing. The employee accomplishes this task through the coordination of services with EHS resources, other University departments and outside agencies. The employee supports the department's Emergency Response Team.

The incumbent must support university sustainability goals and incorporate them into the areas for which s/he are responsible. Must effectively work with a variety of diverse staff, faculty, and students. Must seek to understand the university’s diverse priorities and goals as well as understand that broad perspectives lead to more effective decision-making and incorporate these into their work.

As one of the Fire Compliance Associates you will be responsible for working collaboratively with the University Fire Marshal, Fire Protection Systems Specialist, co-Fire Compliance Associate, and Supervisor of Emergency Services assisting with the management of the University's compliance with the New York State Codes, and other applicable fire safety and life safety laws and standards; You will also be providing support by conducting fire safety education and training as requested. You may also be asked to assist with fire investigations (investigations involving crimes are coordinated with local Law Enforcement Agencies).

In addition, you will also be responsible as the Fire Protection Impairment Coordinator to notify Campus Stakeholders of impairments to any fire and life safety system and to initiate any required fire watch efforts as required with tracking efforts. Act as the Knox Box Coordinator for all buildings on the Ithaca main campus. Provide guidance and support for evacuation drills, fire inspections of campus buildings and public assembly events, emergency procedure planning and training, fire data analysis, code consultation, general fire safety related consultations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Fire Sciences, Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience working with Fire Protection Systems.
  • New York State Code Enforcement Certification or within one year of appointment
  • Knowledge of fire protection equipment testing inspection and maintenance processes and procedures
  • Strong Mechanical Aptitude
  • Thorough knowledge of NFPA Codes applicable to Fire Suppression and Life Safety Systems
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills along with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong Computer Experience
  • Ability to interact with all levels of university personnel
  • Ability to pass a background check as required by Cornell.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License. Out-of-state employees must obtain and show proof of a NYS license within 30 days of starting employment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and be medically cleared to wear respiratory protection equipment and other personal protective equipment for hazardous materials emergency responder work.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Fire Sciences, Engineering
  • Five years’ experience working with Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems
  • New York State Code Enforcement certification or International Codes Council certification
  • Advanced First Aid and CPR
  • HAZWOPER trained
  • NICET (Minimum) Level-1 Certification in Sprinkler Systems and or Fire Alarm Systems
  • NIMS, ICS, NIMS/ICS Training and experience including ICS 100, 200, 300 and 400, NIMS IS-700, NRP IS-800

This is a contract college position.
