Position Title: Fire Engineer                                           FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

This position is responsible for performing a variety of advanced working level technical and supervisory tasks in fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, prevention, investigation, administrative, and other special assignments. Performs advanced or basic life support to patients according to protocols and level of certification.

Supervision Received

Works under the direct supervision of the Shift Captain or designated Shift Officer. May report to Chief Officers.

Supervision Exercised

In the absence of a higher-ranking officer, the Fire Engineer may be required to act-in as an Officer in Charge (OIC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Promotes and follows the departments mission and vision statements, values and expectations.

• Respond to alarms and perform firefighting activities including driving apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, fire combat, containment, salvage, and extinguishment tasks.


• Drives fire apparatus to fire and emergency scenes safely and efficiently; performs vehicle placement to achieve effective delivery of suppression materials (water/chemicals, etc…); operates fire pumps to control various nozzle pressures and flows; assures proper procedures are followed to engage, prime, and discharge supply lines; connects hydrant lines and changes over form tank operations to hydrant operations.


• Perform forcible entry into involved buildings and vehicles.


• Perform emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.


• Participate in fire drills, attend classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.


• Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus after returning from incident and notify supervisors of any discrepant conditions.


• Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, perform routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keep records of such action.


• Operate radio and other communication equipment.


• Lead and/or participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.


• Keep fire station, equipment, and grounds in a clean, operational, and orderly condition.


• Acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the city, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.


• Enforce and perform all work duties and activities in accordance with Department/City policies and procedures.


• Present programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.


• Maintain a productive working environment which includes, but is not limited to, a spirit of cooperation with co-workers, peers and the public.


• Maintain and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for various situations encountered, including use of Personal Accountability Record (PAR) systems.


• Work in a safe manner and report unsafe activity and conditions. Follow city-wide safety policy and practice adhere to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the department/city policies and procedures.


• Maintain physical fitness level that ensures personal safety.


• Ensure required activities are performed in a timely manner.


• Quality-check applicable incident reports and ensure complete and accurate information is contained within. Provide feedback to employees on deficiencies within reporting.


• Provide employee feedback (positive and negative), as the situation warrants and perform periodic evaluations of employee performance.


• Subject to emergency callbacks and/or mandatory return to duty.


• Other duties as assigned by the Fire Captain or Chief Officer.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Advanced EMS and resuscitation techniques and their application.


• Advanced Technical and administrative principles and practices, methods and techniques of fire suppression and prevention programs and emergency medical services.


• Advanced Operation, maintenance, and uses of modern firefighting equipment.


• City policies and procedures, and their application to encountered environments.

Skilled In:

• Operation of the applicable tools and equipment.


• Working under stress and using good judgment in emergency situations.

Ability To:

• Present various options and approaches to problem identification and resolution.


• Acquire and maintain a professional uniform, in compliance with department requirements.


• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.


• Analyze situations and adopt a reasonable course of action.


• Attend required training events and maintain required training participation levels.


• Work irregular shift hours and participate in staffing pages (“Callbacks”) as required.


• Maintain physical fitness per department standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from High School or GED and completed a minimum of three (3) years of full-time firefighting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications Required (Must Keep Current)

• Utah Stated Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic Certified


• Certification for CPR, ACLS, PEPP/PALS


• UFRA Firefighter I & II Certified


• UFRA Hazmat Awareness & Operations Certified


• Valid State of Utah Driver’s License Class “D”


• NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800


• UFRA Wildland Firefighter I certified  


• UFRA Apparatus Driver’s Operator-Pumper (ADO-P) certified


• UFRA Apparatus Driver’s Operator-Aerial (ADO-A) certified


• UFRA Instructor I certified


• UFRA Officer I certified


• UFRA Command Training Center certified

Recommended or currently working toward. Pending class/training availability.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and smell.  Employee will also occasionally be required to perform a variety of physically demanding maneuvers and activities while involved in fire fighting and rescue operations, including running, walking, stooping, bending, rolling, crawling, climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying, dragging, and safely operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Employee must successfully pass medical exam after job offer and periodically through employment.

The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 

Work Environment

The noise level is usually quiet in office settings and loud at emergency scenes.  Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles and outdoor settings.  Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations.  Individual is exposed to hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance including, but not limited to smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils.

Work can be under a variety of unfavorable conditions including harsh weather, poor or no lighting, extremes in temperatures, all types of weather conditions, electrical hazards and exposure to communicable diseases and blood-borne pathogens in body fluids.
