Description

TITLE: FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:

The purpose of this classification is to perform emergency response work in firefighting, emergency rescue, and hazardous materials and to protect the lives and properties of the citizens of the City, in a training capacity; helps firefighters at stations, and during incidents.

As with all Fire Department staff and suppression personnel, the person in this classification shall be called upon to perform hazardous duties in and around areas where fire, hazardous substances, man-made or natural disasters are occurring or have occurred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Responds with a company of firefighters to incidents requiring: 
  • Fire fighting
  • Emergency rescue
  • Hazardous materials response
  • Rides on fire apparatus to the emergency scene, ensuring that warning devices are in operation when necessary.
  • Operates and monitors equipment and apparatus at response scenes such as:
  • Pumps
  • Hoses
  • Gauges
  • Air compressors
  • Ladders
  • Aerial platforms
  • Inspects assigned emergency response apparatus and equipment daily to ensure efficient operating conditions and readiness
  • Cleans and maintains equipment as necessary, or after an emergency response operation
  • Performs minor repairs and assists in major repairs of apparatus and equipment as appropriate
  • Tests equipment.
  • Answers telephones, radios, faxes, and questions; monitors weather conditions.
  • Attends and participates in training sessions on such topics as:
  • Fire suppression techniques
  • Equipment techniques
  • Emergency medical care
  • Hazardous material containment
  • Street layout
  • Building and hydrant locations
  • Incident command, management, inspections, and leadership training etc.
  • Assists Emergency Medical Technicians during emergency rescue operations in accordance with protocols for Basic Life Support.
  • Assists EMT in evaluating mechanisms of injuries and mental status
  • Assists in preparing patients for transport to medical facility.
  • Cleans and performs minor maintenance on department buildings; maintains fire station grounds.
  • Shall inspects commercial establishments and multi-family residences to determine the existence of:
  • Fire hazards
  • The efficiency of fire protection equipment
  • General compliance with appropriate codes and fire prevention standards.
  • Operates fire apparatus, thermal imaging camera, personal computer, copier, facsimile machine, radio, portable lights, aerial ladder, vacuum cleaner, self-contained breathing apparatus, electric smoke ejector, jacks air bags, hydraulic extrication tools, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheets, database, or other system software.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs other related duties as required


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or GED. 

Must complete six months of training as a firefighter trainee and complete a four-hundred-hour certification to become a Kentucky Certified Firefighter. 

In addition, a valid certification must be acquired in CPR and First Aid; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 

Must acquire IFSAC Firefighter I and 2, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification within the first year of promotion to Fire Fighter status and must acquire KY EMT certification within 18 months of promotion to firefighter status. 

All the above listed certifications must be maintained once achieved.
