Job Description - Firefighter


The City of Marquette is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter. We are looking to fill one position.  Applicants must be Fire Fighter I and II certified. EMT basic or EMT paramedic is preferred. This is an ALS non-transporting agency. The starting compensation for a probationary Firefighter is $60,336.64 - $61,792.64 per year plus a generous benefit package. After the probationary year, the Firefighter salary will increase to $66,510.08 - $67,966.08. The City of Marquette participates in Michigan Act 88 which allows for combined service retirement. POSITION SUMMARY


 


Respond and participate in fire prevention and suppression, medical emergencies, rescue and other emergencies; routine maintenance of fire halls and equipment and other related duties.


 


SUPERVISION RECEIVED


 


Work is performed under the direct supervision of the shift Battalion Chief, Captain, or Lieutenant.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES


 


An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following specific or related duties:


 


1. Respond to fire and other emergency incidents in a safe and timely manner. Perform rescues, fight fires, and conserve property.  Perform other emergency tasks as ordered for the mitigation of other emergency situations.


 


2.  Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair firefighting equipment, buildings, and real property under the care of the City of Marquette Fire Department. Designated firefighters trained to specialized levels may be required to perform more specialized maintenance on specific equipment.


 


3.  Respond to emergency incidents on callbacks and perform emergency tasks as directed by the Incident Commander.



4. 
Operate manual and motorized ground equipment and specialized power rescue tools in emergency and in training situations. Operate advanced life support equipment to the paramedic level.


 


5.  Participate in fire prevention activities, including but not limited to schools, target populations, the business and professional community, and the public at large.


 


6.  Participate in informal and pre-incident inspections about the City.


 


7.  Train and occasionally deliver training in efficient and up-to-date fire/rescue methods, both hands-on and through visual/print media. Once certified, maintain fire/rescue proficiency to NFPA Firefighter II standards, and paramedic license, including all attendant certifications without lapse. 


 


8.  May be assigned special projects through the chain of command and under the supervision of the immediate supervisor.


 


9.  Comply with City of Marquette policies and procedures and department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.


 


10.  Possess working knowledge of, and when necessary, enforce applicable state and local fire safety laws and codes, consistent with individual position, rank, and authority.


 


11.  Remain conversant with and proficient in all aspects of firefighting/rescue procedures.


 


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS


 


Physical Requirements:



Ability to perform fire and other emergency related tasks utilizing full protective gear ensembles and SCBA.  A description of typical emergency tasks would include but not necessarily be limited to tasking described in NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II Professional Qualifications.


 


Professional Certifications:


 


Operational working knowledge equivalent to NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II Professional Qualifications.  Must be State of Michigan NFPA certified Firefighter I, II and possess either a State of Michigan paramedic license or national license that is convertible to a State of Michigan license.  Must obtain Red Cross waterfront lifeguard certification within one year of hire date.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED


 




  • Knowledge of modern firefighting techniques and the use and operation of a wide variety of firefighting equipment and apparatus.


  • Knowledge of the techniques and equipment used in rescue operations.


  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations regulating fire control and prevention.


  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including the locations of principle buildings, sprinklered structures, the capacity and location of fire hydrants.


  • Knowledge of the techniques, procedures, practices and equipment used in emergency medical assistance at the paramedic level.


 




  • Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with public officials, the general public, and other City employees.


  • Ability to continue training and schooling to obtain and keep current state certification as a licensed fire fighter, and the paramedic licensing and certifications necessary to maintain that license without lapse.                                                            



PHYSICAL DEMANDS


 




  • Lifting in excess of 100 pounds without the assistance of another person, and frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 75 pounds.


  • Frequent standing and sitting.


  • Frequent bending, twisting, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, grappling and swimming.


  • Occasional driving and walking.


  • Must be capable of using hand(s)/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pulling and operating controls.


  • Ability to communicate orally in a clear manner.


  • Ability to distinguish sounds at various frequencies and volumes.


  • Ability to distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.


  • Ability to withstand temperature and noise changes in the work environment.
