Position Title: Firefighter EMT

Employment Status: Full-Time, Career

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt (Fire Protection Employee – 29 U.S.C. § 207(k))

Reports To: Lieutenant (through established chain of command)

Division: Operations

Salary: $75,000 - $95,000 annually (or updated range per District compensation plan)

Work Schedule: 48/96 shift assignment; subject to callback and emergency response

Effective Date: 04.2026

Position Summary

The Firefighter EMT performs fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue operations, and hazard mitigation activities in support of the District’s mission to protect life and property. This position operates within the established chain of command and performs duties in accordance with District policies, procedures, and operational standards.

The Firefighter EMT is responsible for maintaining operational readiness, participating in training, and supporting emergency and non-emergency activities.

FLSA Classification and Work Period

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to overtime provisions applicable to fire protection employees under 29 U.S.C. § 207(k).

The District has established a 7(k) work period for fire protection personnel. Overtime eligibility and compensation are calculated in accordance with federal law and District policy.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Emergency Response Operations

• Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents, including fire suppression, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents 
• Performs fireground operations including suppression, search, ventilation, forcible entry, and overhaul 
• Provides basic life support (BLS) care within the EMT scope of practice 
• Operates within the Incident Command System (ICS) and follows the direction of supervising officers 

Operational Readiness

• Ensures apparatus, equipment, and personal protective equipment are maintained in a ready state 
• Conducts daily, weekly, and assigned inspections of equipment and facilities 
• Reports deficiencies through the chain of command 

Training and Professional Development

• Participates in required training, drills, and continuing education 
• Maintains all certifications and qualifications required for the position 
• Demonstrates proficiency in fire suppression, EMS, and rescue operations 

Documentation and Communication

• Completes accurate and timely incident reports and documentation 
• Communicates effectively with supervisors, team members, and partner agencies 
• Maintains knowledge of District geography, response areas, and operational procedures 

Station and Community Responsibilities

• Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the station and equipment 
• Participates in public education, community outreach, and prevention activities 
• Represents the District professionally in all interactions 

Professional Conduct and Compliance

• Adheres to District policies, procedures, and standards of conduct 
• Maintains a respectful and professional workplace environment 
• Complies with safety regulations and operational guidelines 

Additional Duties

• Performs other duties as assigned, consistent with the scope of the position 

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age
• High school diploma or GED 
• Colorado Firefighter I certification 
• Colorado Hazardous Materials Operations certification 
• Colorado EMT-B certification 
• National Registry EMT (or ability to maintain certification) 
• Valid Colorado driver’s license with acceptable driving record 
• Must successfully pass a criminal background check, driving record check, and drug screening in compliance with Colorado law.
• Current AHA CPR certification 
• NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800
• Must obtain a current CPAT certification by August 14th, 2026

Conditions of Continued Employment

• Maintenance of all certifications and licensure 
• Compliance with District training and performance standards 
• Participation in required physical fitness and readiness programs 
• Compliance with District policies and operational expectations

• Knowledge of fire suppression, EMS, and rescue operations 
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks under stressful conditions

Supervision

This position does not have supervisory authority.

The Firefighter EMT operates within the established chain of command and reports to the Lieutenant, who reports through command staff to the Fire Chief under the authority of the Board of Directors pursuant to Colorado Revised Statutes Title 32.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

• Performs strenuous physical activity under extreme weather conditions, including temperatures below 20°F and above 100°F.
• Lifts up to 60 pounds frequently and engages in bending, stooping, crawling, climbing, and repetitive motions.
• Works in hazardous environments, including exposure to fire, smoke, chemicals, electrical hazards, and confined spaces.
• May be exposed to gases, fumes, dust, and biohazards.
• Must be able to hear verbal commands accurately in emergency conditions.
• Must be able to read and interpret numbers, documents, and equipment gauges.
• Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
