Job Description - Firefighter Recruitment

Salary Range:

$44,950.36 - $91,333.84

FIREFIGHTER

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK
Under direct supervision, responds to (fire alarms and emergency calls to protect life and property endangered by fire, serves as a substitute fire engineer; maintains fire company, grounds, and motorized firefighting equipment; assists in fire prevention inspections; participates in fire inspection, prevention, and suppression training programs.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
• Responds to emergency calls.
• Performs the duties of ladder man, hydrant man, hose man, rescue man, nozzle man; or in other similar capacity.
• Lays and connects hoses.
• Holds nozzle and directs water streams.
• Uses forcible entry tools, raises and climbs ladders.
• Uses other related equipment.
• Ventilates burning buildings.
• Performs rescue work.
• Acquires and maintains the necessary skills and knowledge at a level determined by the Fire Chief, to provide basic and advance life support service.
• Performs overhaul after fires;
• Drives motorized firefighting equipment;
• Acts as a substitute fire engineer under special instructions,
• Accomplishes preventative maintenance and daily inspection of fire trucks and pumpers.
• Inspects fire trucks after each operation to ensure proper and efficient operating condition, reports worn, damaged, or lost parts and tools, accomplishes reports on preventative maintenance.
• Cleans, washes and services pump and engine.
• Changes hose on pumpers.
• Participates in inspections of industrial, commercial, and residential properties, and places of public assembly for fire hazards.
• Assists in the enforcement of fire prevention codes and ordinances.
• Becomes familiar with design and construction of buildings, locations of exits, end entrances, in training programs related to fire suppression, fire inspection, fire prevention, firefighting techniques; and all other related areas.
• Assists visitors in and around the station; becomes familiar with the layout of the City and the water system therein; performs clerical duties and other related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, regulations, prevention, and suppression literature.
• Learn technical firefighting principles and techniques within a reasonable length of time.
• Be learn basic and advanced life support techniques.
• Carry out assigned duties without close supervision.
• Perform strenuous and hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.
• Speak well and present ideas clearly and efficiently.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Work effectively with other employees.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

EDUCATION
Must be a high school graduate from a state school or a private school accredited by an association recognized by the State of Florida Board of Education, or have a G.E.D. from the State of Florida or any state approved by the Florida State Department of Education, or a high school equivalency certificate from U.S.A.F.I.; or an Associate Degree or a transcript verification of successful completion of two (2) years of college work from any state accredited institution.

PHYSICAL CONDITION
Must be able to meet N.F.P.A. standards 1001 for firefighter professional qualifications, Chapter 2-2-2, medical requirements for fire department candidates.

AGE
Must be eighteen (18) years of age (no maximum).

CITIZENSHIP
Must be U.S. Citizen.

DRIVER LICENSE
Must have a valid State of Florida Driver's License.

MORAL CHARACTER
Must have a good moral character as determined by investigation.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Individuals hired after October 1, 1988 shall not be permitted to use tobacco products on or off duty.
