Job Description - First-Year Advisor and First-Year Experience Program Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY:


First-Year Advisor- The First-Year advisor is responsible for serving first-year students through advising, coaching, and supporting them as needed. The First-Year advisor seeks out and assists all students for the purpose of strengthening specific academic skills and long-term planning to improve students’ success. An academic coach/first year student advisor will advise approximately 250 students.


Program Coordinator - The program coordinator for First-Year Experience promotes the mission of the First-Year Experience department and Bob Jones University by providing support to develop a constituency of regenerated students who have an adequate foundation to profit from a Christian liberal arts college education (BJU MS 2.5) and to aid faculty, advisors and other personnel who interact with first-year students. (BJU MS 1.6). The program coordinator is responsible for increasing the effectiveness of the First-year Experience department through the support of the Director of Student Engagement and Success.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Support the mission of the Academic Resource Center

  • Assist with First-Year Experience programming, coordination, and communication

  • Serve as the instructor for Uni 101- Pathways sections

  • Meet regularly with Uni 092- Academic Coaching and Uni 093- Academic Management Seminar students

  • Coach students on a regular basis who are seeking guidance in the areas of reading skills, note-taking skills, test taking skills, study skills, etc.

  • Develop academic action plans for students as needed

  • Work with faculty to establish academic goals for students

  • Support students as they strive to achieve their academic goals.

  • Attend workshops related to student success

  • Advise first-year students in the scheduling of their classes and their long-term success

  • Track student grades and proactively advise/coach as needed

  • Communicate the religious beliefs of BJU to students and student affiliates

  • Answer questions concerning faith, doctrine and creed of BJU to constituents, students, or those inquiring about BJU


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:



  • Knowledge of BJU academic program

  • Knowledge of educational theories and learning styles in post-secondary learning environments

  • Knowledge of the literature on college student success.

  • Self-motivated

  • Ability to identify, define, and evaluate problems; and develop appropriate strategies and solutions

  • Ability to work with administrators, faculty, staff, GAs, and students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills. Ability to make effective oral and written presentations. Proven ability to effectively and professionally communicate using tact and diplomacy.
