(Sockeye Salmon Reintroduction & Monitoring)

Location: Toppenish & Cle Elum



The Fisheries Technician II for the sockeye program will be required to perform a variety of technical and skilled tasks related to fisheries management and population monitoring. The primary duties will include spawning ground and carcass surveys, juvenile and adult fish tagging and enumeration, juvenile and adult fish capture and release, gillnetting, block netting, seining, electrofishing, recording of detailed field data, fish species identification, boat operation, quad operation, snow mobile operation, operation of fish trapping facilities, fish transport requiring a commercial driver's license (CDL).



Examples of Work Performed:


Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging and Floy tagging of juvenile and adult salmonids for migration and survival monitoring.


General maintenance of all equipment, including motorized equipment and consumables, and purchasing operating supplies and inventory.


Monitoring of early life history study sites: download of temperature data, enumeration of pre-emergent fish, deployment and retrieval of technical monitoring gear, data recording, and proficiency with data cataloging.


Spawning ground surveys to conduct the following: genetic sampling, carcass recovery, carcass evaluation (length, condition), spawn condition, spawner distribution, etc.


Operation of the off-ladder adult fish facility at Priest Rapids Dam, requiring knowledge of gate operation, safe fish handling and fish sorting.


The safe collection and transport of both juvenile and adult salmonids. Attention to fish health during long-distance transport.


Invasive predator removal and disposal.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Knowledge of standard fisheries principles and procedures.


Knowledge of public outreach and tactful interaction with public to promote program awareness. A desire to learn new methods and willingness to attend professional workshops for professional growth within the program.


Knowledge and skills in the operation of equipment and tools used in fisheries work.


Knowledge of Basic facilities and equipment maintenance.


Ability to be highly dependable, take direction and adhere to a schedule.


Ability to work cohesively and productively with others.


Ability to solve problems and work effectively with little guidance.


Ability to effectively communicate and express ideas both verbally and in writing for effective cooperation within Yakama Nation and between Yakama Nation co-management agency staff.


Ability to work outdoors under all types of conditions, in inclement weather, and perform physical labor for extended periods of time including overtime when necessary.


Ability and willingness to travel long distances within the Yakima Basin during a workday.



Minimum Requirements:


A High School Diploma or equivalent, and two years of professional experience as a Fisheries Technician I or equivalent.


Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.


Required to pass a pre-employment background check.


Must have or the ability to obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License and Commercial Driver's license (CDL) with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Tribal Driving Permit with Defensive Driving Course Certificate (to be updated every 2 years).



Preferred Requirements:


Yakama enrolled preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
